Chapter 43 - An Unfortunate Event (Part 1)

Arden's POV-

Arden sat on his chair, eating his dinner quietly while also paying attention to etiquette.

'Fork in the left hand, knife in the right.'

He focused on cutting a small piece of steak carefully, his hands shaking from the pressure. Then, a gentle hand rested on his, stopping him from continuing.

He looked up at Alec, who had taken Arden's plate and cut the steak neatly.

"You don't have to force yourself."

Arden nodded. Then, knowing that Alec could not see him, opened his mouth to thank his brother.

"Tha-"

A small piece of steak was held in front of his mouth. Arden took it into his mouth slowly, chewing the piece carefully.

"Chew slowly!"

Alec smiled as he watched Arden's eyes twinkle in delight. Then, he placed the plate back in front of Arden.

They ate in comfortable silence, before Alec cleared his throat.

"Arden. I have news."

Arden looked up, tilting his head inquiringly.

"Arien and Arjen's room was destroyed, so they are now sleeping in father's room. We won't be seeing them as frequently."

Arden jumped in his seat, alarmed.

"How was it...destroyed?"

Alec's gaze hardened, though he still tried to remain calm for Arden's sake.

"It was a planned attack. Our incompetent guards failed to protect the prince and princess. How useless."

Arden shuddered at the sight of Alec's vicious expression.

The older boy, noticing this, quickly hid the terrifying glint and softened his expression.

"Oh, excuse me. I didn't mean to scare you."

Arden, whose face was still pale from fear, smiled shakily.

"I-it's okay. Are big brother Arjen and big sister Arien safe?"

"Fortunately, yes. If not, those guards would be in big trouble."

As he said the last words, his smile became once again, and Arden could only watch his gentle older brother's face morph into that of a murderous beast.
