Previous night

Just a step past the threshold of his room, Daniel shrugged Jessica's hand off his shoulder, causing her to fall on the floor, sliding along the tall door. How much he hates unnecessary touches and conversations but it was his ruse for which he had to bear such torment.

Easing the muscles of his shoulder, Daniel brought out a cigar between his fingers and crouched down to Jessica's level while lighting it up. Just a few days and a few conversations, counting scarce words, were enough for the man to study the situation.

At the event of the official announcement, Jessica's father, Antonio Romano made one foul mistake. As his wife confirmed to him that the news of their marriage was sourced to Jessica, Daniel could smoothly process the level of desperation the Romanos were bearing. So desperate ... that they took that point one per cent chance of Daniel's marriage being fake, knowing that a man like him would not carry such loose ends to the enemy's clan.

Jessica would not be much of a help to him, Daniel knew but being a man of perfection, he could not let her slide, especially when she was the one throwing herself at him.

"Why? Why aren't you dru-drunk?" Jessica, naggingly slurred. Daniel had more alcohol than her at that golf club bar they visited. The club was owned by them and Jessica tagged along with Daniel as he had gone there to pay a visit. She expected some actions after both of them got charged with alcohol, but the man was a beast, a beast unaffected by alcohol.

"Alcohol's pretty weak," Daniel commented in an ignorant tone not helping Jessica with her misery. But further mocked, "Your father is quite happy today. Isn't he?"

"He went to Uncle Aldo's casino .. for fun," Jessica garbled reaching her hands out towards Daniel with great effort.

"For fun," Daniel scoffed, catching her hands mid-air. By the few encounters Daniel let Jessica have with him today, the only thing he could study was Antonio appearing more buoyant than he should be, for someone who recently had to give up the powers against his will. That only deepened the depths of his suspicions.

"Have you ever wondered why your father wants me so close to that old warehouse?" Daniel questioned stressing the intoxicated girl rather than giving her the relief she was craving even though he was not expecting any answer from her. But it was the obvious dots that he was trying to connect.
