You were lying on a stiff hospital bed, the sheets scratchy against the bandages wrapped carefully around your arms and legs. Everything hurt. It felt as if every inch of your body was being stabbed into by needles and all you could do was remain still. Though most of your wounds were bandaged up, that didn't stop the ache from overtaking your normal function.

It was bright. The overhead fluorescent lights were stabbing into your eyes, making your head pound against your skull even harder.

You tried shifting around a bit trying to find yourself a position in which the pain was bearable, but it was useless. Every movement seemingly made everything ten times worse. Every little kick of your leg or flex of your elbow pulled at the bandages reminding you just how stuck you are.

You slowly shifted your head against the firm pillow, turning your head left your gaze fell on the two men who brought you here. Even through the panes of glass, you could tell they were serious—well one of them was.

What were their names?

You couldn't remember. Trying to think back to what had happened before hurt your head to the extreme. All you remember before you blacked out was the raw unfiltered pain all over your body. Everything else feels like a blur. Second to the pain. It was obvious your current five year old body was not in the position to be able to process everything that had occurred, leaving some obvious gaps in your memory.

You tried really hard to focus in on their conversation, straining to hear what they were saying behind the glass pane—but the pane of glass successfully muffled and distorted their voices. You were left completely in the unknown.

You frowned as you continued to look at them intently, trying to understand what was going on. It was confusing. But your body felt to heavy, weighed down by the exhaustion and pain. It was a relief to be able to just lay down.

You let out a small sigh, your eyes drooping despite the lights. The fear and confusion from before still lingered but become second to your exhaustion. You felt you were safe, at the very least for now. And that was enough.

As you began to drift off, their muffled voices became a soft hum in the background, serving as a reminder you were not alone.

A few hours had passed and in that time you had drifted in and out of sleep for a while. The steady beeping of the heart monitor and the quiet hum of the hospital filled the silence. Eventually, the exhaustion had taken over completely and you managed to fall into a deep, dreamless sleep.
