It was a warm, sunny day at the playground, the bright rays of the sun casting long shadows on the ground as you sat on the swing, the soft creak of the chains the only sound filling the brief silence. The warmth of the day was a stark contrast to the worry bubbling in your chest, though the sweet taste of the small cakes Haruko had brought softened it just a little. Haruko, of course, had made sure to remind you—before handing you one—that she only brought them because she had extras, not because she had thought of you. Typical Haruko.
She stood behind you now, giving the swing a gentle push. You looked around the playground absentmindedly, scanning the area for any sign of Shoto, but instead, all you saw were the familiar faces of your classmates, laughing and playing, none of them seeming to share the confusion and worry you felt. Your thoughts swirled in your mind, wondering where he could be.
Suddenly, the swing stopped. Haruko stomped over in front of you, hands on her hips, glaring down at you with a huff. "Why aren't you screaming like before when I pushed you?" she demanded, her tone frustrated.
You blinked up at her, pulling yourself from your thoughts. "Sorry, Haru... I was just thinking too hard."
It had been a few days since Shoto was last in school and y/n couldn't help but feel worried, though she tried to suppress the feeling.
Haruko flicked your forehead lightly, her expression unamused. "Really? That's hard to believe since you don't think that hard in class. If you did, you'd be getting higher than a 2 out of 12 on those quizzes." She smirked, poking at your frown, clearly amused with herself.
You glared at her, slapping her hand away. "Stop it, Haru!" But then, your gaze shifted uh, and your voice softened. "Have you seen Shoto? It's been a while since he's come to school."
Haruko rolled her eyes dramatically. "Yeah, I know! Hasn't it been great?" she teased, but her usual playful tone didn't land the way it normally did.
You whined, "Haru! Be serious!"
"I am being serious" she said rocking on her heels however noticing your worried expression she decided to tone it down a notch. With a sigh, Haruko's expression softened, and she sat down on the swing next to you, her fingers idly gripping the chains. "Okay, okay, fine. Yeah, I guess it has been a while since he last came to school. But he'll probably come back soon. Maybe he just got sick or something—it's fever season, after all."
You nodded slowly, as if trying to convince yourself she was right. "Yeah... maybe."
But even as you sat there, gently swaying in your seat, a nagging feeling tugged at the back of your mind, like something was off. You couldn't shake the eerie sense that there was more to Shoto's absence than just a simple cold.
He'll be back soon... and when he is we can play altogether again!
