Yao Ziqing looked at the unfamiliar equipment in the empty, laboratory-like room and followed Lei Xiao's instructions to undergo various tests.
Seeing Lei Xiao skillfully operating the machines, Yao Ziqing couldn't help but admire him. He thought Lei Xiao was like an all-powerful superhero, so perfect that he didn't seem human.
Lei Xiao asked Yao Ziqing to sit patiently while he carefully analyzed the test results. Although these machines weren't medical devices, they provided a more detailed and comprehensive assessment of the body's indicators than medical equipment.
Lei Xiao would never feel at ease if anyone else checked Yao Ziqing. Regardless of whether the results showed any abnormalities or even the slightest potential risk, he wouldn't let Yao Ziqing face such dangers.
Yao Ziqing watched as Lei Xiao meticulously reviewed each test report, noticing the dense characters on the papers that he couldn't understand at all.
He thought to himself that the gap between him and Lei Xiao was as wide as the difference between clouds and dirt.
After finishing the reports and erasing the data from the machines, Lei Xiao took Yao Ziqing back to their dormitory.
Yao Ziqing felt reassured, thinking that such extraordinary events might not be detectable by machines. He wasn't particularly worried.
"I told my elder brother that I'd return for the holidays. Do you have time off? We could go back together."
Lei Xiao, walking alongside Yao Ziqing at his pace, nodded in response.
"What do you think about the open space behind Uncle Gao Ming's house? Should we consider fencing off an area there and building a house?"
There were many open spaces in their village, and if conditions allowed, they could build a house. Although there was plenty of open land, suitable spots for building weren't many, and villagers were accustomed to rebuilding on their old plots.
The place where Yao Ziqing's family house was situated seemed good. It was in a central location, in a depression with ditches on both sides and a pond below, so there was no risk of flooding.
However, Yao Ziqing felt that this place didn't provide much security in the apocalypse.
"Let's discuss it when we get back."
Yao Ziqing nodded. Although he thought it was a good idea, he preferred to take a closer look after returning.
Although there were many shelters after the apocalypse, Yao Ziqing really didn't want to enter one again. It felt like another hell.
Back in the dormitory, Lei Xiao reviewed the reports once more to ensure he hadn't missed anything. After confirming everything was accurate, he burned the stack of papers in an iron basin and flushed the ashes down the toilet.
Yao Ziqing, sitting on the bed and watching Lei Xiao, felt as though they were involved in some underground secret operation. He wondered what Lei Xiao would think if he knew Yao Ziqing had used the space more than once. Would he be angry?
"There were no abnormalities in the results, but if you feel anything is wrong, you must tell me."
Yao Ziqing quickly nodded. "Second brother, do you think something really terrible will happen, like a prophecy? I want to prepare more, otherwise, I keep feeling uneasy. It feels like a major event is imminent."
Lei Xiao, tidying up his clothes, paused slightly when he heard Yao Ziqing's words.
"Don't worry. Focus on your studies. I'll handle the other matters."
