Ling's pov

"Bright, your girlfriend is here," I announced, opening the door to reveal Orm standing on the porch, her smile radiant as she waited for Bright.

"Thank you," Bright said, rushing down the stairs with a sense of urgency, as if he was late for an important meeting.

"Hey, sweetie, sorry," he said, leaning in to give her a quick peck on the lips. The gesture was affectionate but hasty, as if he was trying to make up for lost time.

"Really, man, how are you dating? Leaving your girlfriend waiting for you?" I said, leaning casually against the door frame, trying to mask my irritation with a touch of amusement.

"At least I am dating. You are not," Bright shot back, his tone laced with a hint of smugness.

"Just go," I said, giving him a dismissive wave as I closed the door behind him.

Bright had been dating Orm for quite a while now. Despite not knowing her very well, we shared a lot of space due to our overlapping university volleyball schedules. Since they started dating, Orm and I were forced into frequent contact. During family dinners, for example, Orm always ended up sitting next to me, with Bright on her other side. This arrangement meant I was constantly sandwiched between the two, listening to their flirtatious banter, which was both uncomfortable and disheartening.

After the door closed, I trudged up to my room, feeling the weight of the evening's interactions press heavily on me. I threw myself onto my bed, my mind buzzing with frustration. Moments later, a knock on the front door jolted me from my thoughts. Ignoring it was a futile effort; it was clear that the disruption wasn't going to stop.

"Ling, Prikhing is here," my mom called from downstairs.

With a sigh, I got up and headed down the stairs, steeling myself for another awkward encounter. The truth was, I wasn't in a relationship, but I did have someone—Prikhing, who was more of a convenience than a deep connection. Bright didn't know about her, which suited me just fine.

As I reached the front door, Prikhing was already there, her face lighting up as she saw me.

"Babe, I missed you," she said, leaning in to greet me with a warm hug. I wrapped my arms around her waist and kissed her, trying to savor the moment.

"Ling?!" Bright's voice cut through the scene, his shock evident. Orm's expression mirrored Bright's, a mix of surprise and confusion.

"You're already back?" I asked nonchalantly, keeping my hands around Prikhing's waist despite the sudden intrusion.

"I came back to get my wallet," Bright said, his voice tinged with annoyance.

"Oh, so get in, go get your wallet," I said, reluctantly separating from Prikhing and taking a step back to let Bright inside.

"Err, I'm going. See you later, babe," Prikhing said, giving me one last smile before she walked towards her car and drove away.

Left alone with a visibly shaken Orm, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of satisfaction. The silence that followed was almost unbearable.

"Well, you made us all think you weren't dating," Orm finally said, breaking the silence with a mix of amusement and curiosity.

"It wasn't a lie. I'm not dating," I said, trying to sound casual, though I could sense that Orm was not entirely convinced.

"Come on, stop lying," Orm said, laughing softly as she looked at me with a playful glint in her eye.

"I'm not lying. Want me to prove it to you?" I said, grinning mischievously as I noticed her cheeks turning a delicate shade of red.
