Orm's pov
The day dragged on, my attention constantly drifting away from the paperwork on my desk and back to thoughts of Ling and Win. The thought of them together gnawed at me, an unwelcome presence I couldn't shake. My fingers hovered over the documents, but my mind was elsewhere, lost in the storm of emotions I'd been trying to ignore.
Then my phone buzzed, snapping me back to reality. I glanced at the screen, my heart skipping a beat as I saw Ling's name. Without hesitation, I picked up, trying to sound casual despite the turmoil brewing inside me. "What's up, babe?" I asked, forcing a lightness into my voice that I didn't feel.
Her voice on the other end was broken, trembling with barely contained sobs. "You knew, didn't you?" she choked out, her words laced with pain.
My stomach twisted. "He broke up with you?" I asked, my heart already knowing the answer.
"Come here," she whispered, her voice so small and fragile it made my chest ache.
"Your office?" I confirmed, already standing up, my body moving on autopilot.
"Mhm," she managed between sobs.
The moment I hung up, I was out the door, my feet carrying me swiftly to my car. The drive to her office felt like an eternity, my thoughts racing faster than the car could go. By the time I arrived, my nerves were shot. I rushed into her office, my breath catching as I saw her pacing, her expression a mix of heartbreak and desperation.
"Okay, calm down," I murmured, wrapping her in a tight embrace as soon as I reached her. Her body felt so small in my arms, so fragile, and I held her close, hoping to shield her from the world. "What happened?" I asked softly, my voice a tender plea for her to let me in.
She took a shaky breath, her words tumbling out in a rush. "I saw them..." Her voice cracked, and I could see the raw pain in her eyes, the reason why she was so traumatized.
I gently guided her towards the couch, sitting down with her, keeping her close. "Hey, calm down, I'm here now," I whispered, trying to soothe her, to make her feel safe. "You saw that?" I asked, my heart breaking for her.
She nodded, her face pale. "I just saw them kissing," I admitted.
"Lucky," she added with a sad laugh, and for a moment, my heart calmed, seeing a glimpse of the Ling I knew, the one who could still find humor even in her pain.
"Hey, forget about him, okay?" I urged, trying to pull her out of the dark place she was sinking into. But then something hit me, a question that needed to be asked. "Or do you love him?"
Ling looked up at me, her eyes wide with surprise and something else, something that sent a shiver down my spine. "Orm, the last few years I've been hoping for you to come back. How could I love him?"
Her words left me stunned, my mind reeling. "Don't know," I replied, trying to keep my tone light despite the whirlwind of emotions swirling inside me. "You seem pretty sad," I added in a teasing tone, hoping to coax a smile from her.
She shook her head, a bittersweet smile tugging at her lips. "I was nervous. I thought you saw them and didn't tell me," she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper.
"God, no," I said quickly, horrified at the thought. "If I saw them doing that, I'd be blind by now," I added, and this time, she laughed, a genuine laugh that warmed my heart.
"Thanks for being here," she said softly, her gratitude wrapping around me like a warm blanket.
"No problem," I replied, but something in her expression, something in the way her eyes lingered on mine, made me lean in closer. "But I told you he could be cheating," I whispered in her ear, my voice a gentle reminder.
"You did," she admitted, her eyes dropping to my lips.
"Can I kiss you?" The question slipped out before I could stop it, my voice a low murmur as I stared at her lips, so close, so tempting.
She didn't answer with words. Instead, she pulled me closer, her lips crashing into mine with a desperation that matched my own.
But just as quickly as it started, she pulled back, shaking her head. "No," she whispered, her voice trembling.
"Too late," I murmured, my voice thick with the desire I could no longer hide. I kissed her again, deeper this time, my hands finding their way to the back of her neck, pulling her closer.
But then she pushed me away, her hands trembling. "I'm really sorry, I can't do it today. I'm traumatized," she said, her voice filled with embarrassment.
"Hey, babe, don't be embarrassed," I reassured her, my voice soft and comforting. "It's okay. Actually, I think you're very strong to be laughing and all."
Ling smiled, a shy, almost relieved smile. "Okay, my little admirer, give me your hand," she said suddenly, her voice taking on a playful tone.
Confused, I did as she asked, holding out my hand. She reached into her pocket, pulling out something small and shiny—a ring. My heart skipped a beat as she slipped it onto my finger.
"Wait, are you...?" My voice trailed off, my mind struggling to catch up.
"Want to date me again, sweetie?" she asked, her voice soft, her smile shy.
I didn't trust myself to speak, so I just nodded, my heart soaring. This was everything I had wanted, everything I had been waiting for, and now it was finally happening.
Ling's smile grew wider, her eyes shining with happiness. "Good," she whispered, leaning in to kiss me again, this time with all the love and promise of a new beginning.
