[T]he classroom buzzed with the usual hum of teenage chatter. Sayuri sat at her desk, her eyes bright and her pigtails bouncing slightly as she doodled in the margins of her notebook. Her cheerful demeanour stood out, a stark contrast to the harsh environment of Fukurōdani. The other students eyed her with a mix of amusement and disdain, their whispers and snickers blending into a low murmur.

"Oi, Sayuri chan," Haruta called out from across the room, his voice dripping with mockery. "What's with those pigtails? Trying to look like a preschooler?"

Sayuri looked up, her smile unwavering. "No? I like them, and they're really cute," she replied cheerfully, completely unaware of the cruelty behind the words.

Haruta's grin widened. "They make you look like a little kid. You should grow up, we're in high school now."

The group around Haruta erupted into laughter, their cruel words bouncing off Sayuri, who continued to smile, seemingly unfazed. You sat at the back of the room, noting the distant look in Sayuri's eyes with your usual indifference. You were all too familiar with that look, the same one you used to wear. Since you had dealt with the group of boys who'd tried to pick a fight with you, hardly anyone tried approaching you, but the whispers behind your back hadn't stopped.
