Summer 2

Wren woke up to sunlight pouring in through her living room windows, the smell of coffee making her salivate. She sat up with a stretch, slightly disoriented from her sleep. She followed the smell to the kitchen, rubbing her eyes in attempt to wake herself up.

On the counter, next to a fresh pot of coffee, was a note.

Henny,

While I'd much rather spend my morning helping you with your farm work, I had to get home to watch Vincent. Sorry for crashing on your chair, I fell asleep serenading you. Hope this coffee makes up for that.

Thank you for last night and for talking to me, friend.

-Sam

Wren smiled softly, putting the note up on her fridge before making her way across the kitchen to grab a mug. After a quick outfit change into a blank tee and shorts, she took her coffee outside and sat on the porch swing she had set up.

Looking out onto the farm, she took in her past season's progress for the first time, and felt pride in her work. She'd successfully cleared out a third of the farm of weeds, rocks, and tree's, allowing the space for her crop field, as well as a space for her chickens and ducks. She'd managed to clean up and clear the old cobblestone walkway her grandfather had laid out, and while it was nice for now, she couldn't help daydreaming about rearranging the farm to become truly hers.

The sound of footsteps approaching brought her out of her head. She looked up the road to see Abby approaching, a plastic bag in hand.

"Hey!" Wren called out, waving and smiling. She was already planning on making a trip to visit Abby and explain her absence, but she felt guilty that she wasn't the one making the first move to see her.

"What the hell? Where have you been?" Abby asked, throwing her hands up as she reached the steps.

"I know, I know! I'm sorry, Abby, I didn't mean to drop off the face of the earth like that, I'm really sorry if I worried you." Wren began, moving over and patting the seat next to her. Abby stood cross armed, her face somewhat hardened.

"You better have a good reason." She stated, her smiling cracking.

"Abs, you have no idea." Wren stated, patting the seat next to her once more. Abby's face softened as she smiled, hurrying to sit next to Wren and hear whatever gossip there was to come.

"Okay, okay, so, after the flower dance, when Sam and I left the bar-" Abby cut Wren off with a squeal.

"You did it, didn't you? How big was it?" She smacked Wren's arm lightly.

Wren rolled her eyes with a scoff, "No, we didn't, if you let me finish!" Abby's smile dropped as she whispered a small "Sorry."

"When we left the bar," Wren continued, "We went for a walk on the beach and he gave me this necklace." Wren motioned to the stone on her neck. Abby made a small gasp, before covering her mouth.

"Did he ask you out?" Her voice was laced with excitement, and Wren scrunched her face up slightly.

"No exactly... We, uh, kissed," Wren said, resulting in Abby smacking her arm again, being sure to keep silent so Wren would continue "...and then he tried to tell me he loves me and I wouldn't let him." Wren closed her eyes tightly to avoid seeing Abby's disappointment.

"You What? What do you mean, 'didn't let him'?" Abby asked, her voice flat.

"I interrupted him. He started to say it and I panicked and told him not to say that." She sighed, offering a small, fake smile to try and ease the disappointment and annoyance on Abby's face. It didn't work.
