Summer 13
Wren woke to the sound of heavy splats on her roof. Slowly opening her eyes, she felt Sam's body wrapped around her as he spooned her, holding her close.
She took a deep breath, appreciating the moment as she buried her face into his arm.
"...I'll put it in the closet..." he mumbled in her ear, his words slurred.
"What?" She asked, turning her face to see him.
"Huh? The bucket." He answered, eyes still closed, eyebrows furrowed.
"What bucket?" She asked again, realizing he was sleep talking.
"Magic bucket." he sighed, rolling away from her, hiding his face into a pillow.
Wren giggled softly, looking to the clock. She figured it would be kind of her to start some breakfast for him.
Quietly getting out of bed, she slid her feet into her slippers, grabbing a sweater and heading into the kitchen.
As she passed the front window, she froze, double taking outside.
"What the fuck...?" She mumbled as her eyebrows drew together, trying to understand what she was seeing.
A green fog covered the farm, accompanied by slimy green rain and a moss that crawled up every building.
"Sam?" She yelled, unable to look away. She heard a groan, followed by movement.
"Sam come here!" She yelled again. He groaned louder.
"Yes?" He asked, his voice deep and broken from sleep. Standing just in his underwear, his hair flattened against his head with a slight wave against it. If she wasn't fearing doomsday, she would have pushed him right back into the bedroom.
"What the fuck?" He said louder as he looked out the window, rubbing his eyes.
The stood in silence, gawking out the window.
"What do we do?" She asked, slightly panicked and wondering about her animals.
"Do I look like a weatherman? How would I know?" He scoffed, turning to the the T.V.
As he flipped it on, nothing but static reached them. Wren glanced across the room, noticing the message light blinking on her phone.
She crossed the room, picking it up and motioning for Sam to come closer. She played the message, holding the phone between their ears as he leaned down to listen.
"This is an automated message sent to all residents of Pelican Town, sent by Mayor Lewis,
Good Morning folks! As you may have noticed... we have a bit of a peculiar weather phenomenon happening. We are currently unaware of the effects of the rain or fog, so we ask that all residents remain indoors for the time being. Demitrius will be running water and air quality tests to determine how to proceed. Please do not panic! We will update you as soon as we have more details. Stay safe."
Wren and Sam looked at each other slowly as the message ended, their expressions matching.
"So..." Wren started, shaking her head slightly, "You want some breakfast?" She said, fighting the slight laugh that was begging to be released, resulting in Sam doing the same.
"We shouldn't laugh, right? This could be a serious problem." he said through snickers.
"At least you don't have to go to work today?" She offered, turning to head into the kitchen.
"Can I take a shower? Or is that prohibited as well?" He asked, crossing the room towards the bathroom.
"Go for it. Maybe you'll get super powers." She called over her shoulder as she began rummaging through her fridge for ingredients. Pancakes sounded good to her.
