Summer 9

The sound of rain on her newly renovated tin roof woke Wren up. With a deep breath, she soaked the moment in, the peaceful bliss of the moody weather, mixed with the comfort of her bed. The moment was cut quickly to an end by the pounding on her front door, before it swung open.

"Delivery!" She heard Sam yell, followed by shuffling footsteps and mumbling.

Wren jumped out of bed, confused and concerned about what could be being luged into her house so early.

"Sam, Seb- What?" Her voice was groggy and broken from sleep and her sudden rise. She saw the two in rain jackets, sneakers soaked and covered in mud (that now trailed through her living room), carrying a large side table with a plastic bag over the top.

"Well good morning, sunshine." Sam smirked as they continued through her living room, placing the item down against the wall that divided her bedroom. She only then realized how she looked as she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror across the room. Hair half up, half down from yesterday's bun, one sock, a large tee and no pants. She was grateful the shirt was big enough to nearly reach her knees.

She was also grateful to see Sam. She hadn't seen him since he told off Lewis, but according to Abby, who heard it from Caroline, the mayor turned up at Sam's the next night with a plate of cookies in hand and a very politically correct apology for the entire family.

"What is that?" Wren did her best to hide her grumpiness. As glad as she was to see them, it didn't change her desire to be wrapped up in her bed.

"Well," Seb sighed, pulling the hood off his head, "my mom felt bad about all the times you'd walk up to the house to plan your next construction, only to realize you didn't have what you needed on you. So she wanted us to bring you this, so you can call ahead." Seb pulled at the tape that held the bag to reveal a landline telephone.

"Wait, really?" She asked, putting her hand on her chest. Seb awkwardly stood there, before shrugging. "Yeah...?"

In any other circumstance, Wren would hug the bearer of such a thoughtful gift. But in the case of Sebastian, she figured a distant "Thank you so much!" would go over better.

"Do you guys want some coffee, some food?" Wren asked, pointing to the kitchen.

"As much as I'd like you to serve me like that, I gotta get to work." Sam winked, to which Seb rolled his eyes, "Get a room."

Wren thanked them again, walking them to the door.

"I'll catch up Seb." Sam muttered. Seb looked at him blankly for a second, before looking at Wren.

"I won't wait up. Have a good day, Wren." He offered her a small smile, and Wren returned one.

After he was out of ear shot, Sam turned back to Wren, a cheeky smirk on his lips.

"So... I think I owe you an apology..." He shoved his hands in his pockets, kicking a rock off Wren's porch.

"Oh? Something about an argument and the mayor...?" She responded, placing her hands on her hips. Sam chuckled, shaking his head.

"I'm sorry I involved you in that. But in my defense, I did tell you to stay on the beach." He brought his hands up in his pockets slightly, to which Wren rolled her eyes.

"But seriously, I am sorry, Wren. I also owe you a thank you. I mean, I knew you were a writer, but what words did you string together that made Lewis look me in the eyes and say 'I'm sorry'? What kind of blackmail do you have against him?"He laughed more, which Wren responded to with a big smile.
