Summer 27

Wren caught the gems that Abby tossed to her, dropping them into the mine carts. Unbeknownst to the boys, Wren had begun taking Abby into the mines with her, after she had far too close of an encounter with a Shadow Monster.

She learned from her grandpas old books that, to her horror, all the stories he told her were true. Knowing the risks, she decided it was best to have someone with her.

"That's the last of them!" Abby called, dropping her gear into their chest. Wren programmed the cart to run to the bus stop, sending it off to meet them there.

"That was a good run! We made good time, it's only... 12:30!" Wren smiled, squinting as they exited the cave.

"I'll help you unload and collect my amethyst tax." She smiled, to which Wren rolled her eyes.

"Stop eating rocks!" She joked, resulting in Abby scoffing and exaggerating her hunger by clutching her stomach.

"They're just sooo shiny!"

The two giggled together as they set out down the mountain.

"Wanna come over tonight? Have a little movie night?" Wren asked, batting her eyes. She wanted to give Sam a break, time to himself to sleep in his own bed after spending every night with her for over a week.

"I wish. I have a family dinner, unfortunately." She sighed, "Besides, I don't think Sam would appreciate sleeping on the couch so we can cuddle."

Wren chuckled, shaking her head. "I suppose. I just feel bad making him stay over every night. And like, I love his family, but something about riding him in his childhood bed makes me feel gross."

Abby laughed loudly, pulling out her water bottle, "How are things with your boyfriend?"

"Good, mostly. I mean, there was this one weird thing last week." Wren sighed, watching Abby draw her eyebrows together, gesturing for her to go on.

"He and Penny. There's this weird tension between them. He claims that it's because he told her he's in love with me and they have to stop being on and off, but... I don't know. He's never given me a reason not to trust him... I feel crazy. I feel like I'm looking for a reason to blow things up." She groaned, crossing her arms. Wren glanced over to Abby, who stood jaw dropped.

"What?"

"Sam... on and off with Penny?" She asked slowly.

"Did you not know about this?" Wren felt a slight panic, worried she just outed Sam.

"No! No, we knew she had a crush on him, but like, all the jokes were just jokes! We were teasing him, we didn't know they were sleeping together!" Abby stood dumbfounded, like her mind was blown.

"No! No, they never slept together! He told me they've made out and tried to be together for years but he never felt the same way." Wren explained.

"Still... wow! I didn't know he was capable of keeping a secret... he never shuts up!" Abby chuckled, shaking her head.

"You don't think... he would lie, right?" Wren asked softly, insecurity in her voice.

"No, not to you. I mean, he loves you, Wren. He's never told Seb or I any of that, what reason would he have to tell you a half truth?"

"Yeah... You're right. I'm being crazy, right?" She forced a smile onto her lips. Abby nodded, placing a hand on her shoulder.

"Your a psycho, babe."

After unloading their finds, Abby happily left with a box full of Amethyst. From the chill in the wind, Wren could tell she only had a day or two left to collect some summer foragables before the fall air would kill the rest. Grabbing her basket, she threw on one of Sam's zip up hoodies and started down toward Cinder Snap forest.
