Yelena didn't remember much about her life before Ketterdam.
She of course knew that she and her family had lived on a farm near Lij. Her mother had died from childbed fever not long after she was born. Her father died in a plow accident when she was 5, Kaz was 9 and Jordie was 13. Soon after, Jordie sold the farm and the three siblings came to the capital of Kerch, Ketterdam.
Due to Kaz telling her, the girl knew Jordie searched for jobs in Ketterdam's financial district, eventually finding work as a runner for Jakob Hertzoon— a man who claimed to be a small-time merchant but was really Pekka Rollins. While their brother talked business, Kaz and Yelena played with a girl whom they thought was Jakob's daughter named Saskia.
After being led into a false business venture, Jordie was conned out of all the remaining money from the sale of his family's farm, which left the three Rietveld siblings living in poverty on the streets. Due to living on the streets, all three of the Rietveld's contracted the Queen's Lady Plague.
Jordan, Kazimir and Yelena Rietveld came to Ketterdam at the ages of 13, 9 and 5, hopefully for a fresh start.
Kaz and Yel Brekker are what survived.
They were thrown into Reaper's Barge amidst countless corpses, including their brother. They emerged as something else.
Two scared children spouting vows of revenge they didn't quite understand and becoming monsters they didn't recognize.
All that was left of the Rietveld family.
