Staying back

As the X-Jet roared to life, its sleek form cutting through the night sky, you stood in the mansion's corridor, watching them disappear into the distance from the large bay windows. The faint hum of the engines lingered in your ears for a few moments, even after they were gone

The mansion felt unusually quiet now, almost too quiet. The others had their mission—saving Rogue, stopping Magneto—but you had yours, too. You volunteered to stay back and take care of Professor X

He still needed care after the strain he'd endured from Magneto's interference and the mental toll of his failed attempts to reach Rogue

You turned down the corridor, making your way toward the medical bay. As you walked, your mind wandered back to the tension between Logan and Scott. Their rivalry was nothing new

But earlier they weren't going at each others throats that much anymore, Which is a good thing of course. Because that means they'd keep their focus on the mission and not at each other

Pushing open the doors to the medical wing, you saw Professor X still laying on the medical table, bathed in the soft glow of moonlight. He was facing the other way from you and you could sense the strain and exhaustion radiating from him

He was lost in thought, no doubt trying to sift through the mental noise, perhaps searching for a glimmer of Rogue's presence

You approached quietly, not wanting to startle him. "Professor" you called softly, but he didn't turn

You walked closer until you were standing beside him. His face calm but weary. After a long moment, he finally spoke, his voice quiet and full of regret. "I should be there with them," he said

"They need you here too," you replied gently, pulling up a chair beside him. "You've done all you can."

He sighed deeply, as though the weight of the world were pressing on his chest. "I failed to protect her. I didn't see Magneto's plans until it was too late. And now, Rogue's life is in danger."

His pain was palpable, but you knew this wasn't his fault. Magneto, from what you've heard, had always been unpredictable, always one step ahead in his schemes

"None of this is on you," you reassured him. "You've done everything you could. They'll bring her back."

Professor X finally turned his head to look at you, his eyes filled with gratitude and a lingering sadness. "Thank you," he said softly. "But I can't help but wonder... Magneto's vision for mutants, the war he predicts—it seems inevitable. And I worry that Logan may not choose the right path when the time comes."

You frowned slightly, not expecting the shift in conversation. "Logan may be rough around the edges, but he cares about Rogue. He's not going to let anything happen to her."

Charles nodded slowly, his mind elsewhere again. "Yes, but his anger... his mistrust of us, of the world—it runs deep. And Erik knows how to exploit those feelings."

You paused, letting his words sink in. You can tell there was truth in what he said. Logan had been resistant to becoming part of the team, always an outsider

And Magneto's message of mutants standing alone, free from the shackles of humanity's fear and hatred, might be tempting to someone who had lived as Logan had

"You can trust him to do the right thing. I've known him the longest, and no one understands him better than I do" you said, though there was a lingering worry in the pit of your stomach

For a while, there was silence between you and Professor X. It wasn't uncomfortable, but it was heavy, the mansion filled with the echoes of anticipation, of the unknown.

"Tell me," Charles finally spoke again, his voice lighter this time, "how are you feeling, being here? The mansion can be... overwhelming for some."

You hesitated, not sure how to answer at first. The mansion had been a whirlwind of new faces, powers, and responsibility. You'd been swept into their world, like a leaf caught in a powerful current

But somehow, in the chaos, you'd found a sense of belonging. And Logan, despite his own internal struggles, had become an anchor in all of it. You'd found comfort in each other, even if he'd never admit it.

"I guess it's a lot to take in," you said honestly. "But it feels like home now. Weirdly enough."

Charles smiled at that, the first real smile you'd seen from him in a while. "That's good to hear. This place, for all its chaos, is meant to be a sanctuary. For all of us."

You nodded, glancing at the clock. Time seemed to be moving both slowly and too fast. The mission was happening, and you could only hope that Logan and the others would return safely, with Rogue in tow

As if reading your thoughts, Charles said, "They'll be fine." His words were calm, reassuring

You gave a small smile. "Yeah...I know."

For now, all you could do was wait, keeping Professor X company, offering him support as best you could. In the quiet of the mansion, with the weight of the world pressing down on all of you, that felt like enough
