Rushing through the hallway of the mansion, I could feel my heart pounding. The call for an emergency surgery had come through, and I knew I had to get to the medbay immediately. As I pushed open the doors, I was met with the familiar, sterile scent of the medical wing.
"What do we have?" I asked, already moving towards the surgical prep area.
Dr. McCoy looked up from the young mutant on the table. "We're dealing with a torn ACL, but his mutation has caused an infection that's led to a rare disease. It's spreading through his leg and putting his nerves at risk. You're the only surgeon here who can handle this without paralyzing the leg."
I nodded, quickly checking the boy's vitals. His blood pressure was alarmingly high. "His systolic is through the roof," I muttered, then turned to the boy, assessing his condition. "We need to stabilize him. Dr. McCoy, hand me the scalpel."
Dr. McCoy passed the scalpel to me. "Are you sure you can do this? The infection is preventing the wounds from healing."
"Yes, but it's going to take a while," I replied, my voice steady. "I need everyone to be extremely gentle with the ligament so I can repair it properly."
The other surgeons nodded in agreement. I took a deep breath and began the delicate process of repairing the ligament. My hands moved with precision, carefully navigating the infected areas. "I'm going to have to try and get rid of this infection," I said, "but one wrong move and it could spread to his nerves. We won't be able to save the leg if that happens."
Hours passed as I meticulously worked to remove the infection. The room was silent, everyone focused on the task at hand. Finally, I managed to clear the infection and repair the ligament. I wrapped up the surgery, feeling a sense of relief wash over me.
"Good job, everyone," I said, stepping back. "We need to put him on some strong antibiotics. You guys can close this up. I have to get going."
Dr. McCoy looked at me with gratitude. "Thank you, Lalia."
I nodded, giving him a small smile before heading out of the medbay. The weight of the surgery lifted from my shoulders as I walked away, knowing that we had saved the young mutant's leg.
I tore off my mask and gloves, feeling the cool air hit my face. The surgery had been intense, but it was moments like these that I lived for. They were an escape from everything going on around me. I loved the precision, the focus, the way everything else faded into the background. But it wasn't just the surgeries that gave me that sense of freedom. Training for missions did the same. It was a different kind of escape, one that required strength and strategy.
I headed to the bathroom, closing the door behind me. As I washed my hands, I let the water run over my fingers, washing away the remnants of the operation. My thoughts drifted to Simon. Lately, he'd been acting strangely, distant and preoccupied. It was unlike him, and it worried me. I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.
