Once I got back to my chair Thursday Morning, I gently held the book out in front of me, turning to that first page again to read the note that was handwritten.

Whoever this book finds itself to..
just know, death will always be the hardest thing to navigate.
And I hope this story makes you feel less alone.
Patrick Ness

I don't know how he...

"There's lots of bookstores there. I just did a little walking, got my steps in."

I didn't understand why he...

"You don't request many things, Don. I'll always take it seriously when you do."

My hands started to shake a bit as I closed and gently set the book onto my desk. I wasn't sure how he had found a signed copy, yet it took everything in me to hold it together in front of Carson today. It took everything in me to hold it together at all today, thinking about that.

He didn't have to... but this was.... I hadn't even explained why the book meant so much to me, and yet... he still put so much time into finding one. And not just anyone, I thought, thinking nonstop of the message the aurthor penned. Carson had known my mother was dead, but he didn't know why. Or how. Did he know this story?

He surely didn't know how much this actually meant to me in relation to her. I hadn't done enough of a good job to show him how much I appreciated it in general, which was something I found myself regretting.

Getting Dylan into his costume was more complicated than the pivot tables I had been working on that almost brought me to tears today. He was very very excited, wanting to play with his lightsaber while I was trying to make sure he would see okay with the mask. I told him he could definitely take it off if it bothers him, but I'll then have to hold it because I didn't want him setting it down somewhere.

Once we made it to the school, parked, and started to walk around, Dylan immediately took off in a sprint. Well, an attempt at one since he had his whole fit on but was determined to make it to the front. I didn't know what had made him this excited, but once I saw Carson, I think I understood. The lightsaber in his hand was a dead giveaway.

And honestly, I think the last time Dylan got this excited was possibly the car frame? I only say that because the kid still got excited to sleep in it every night. I got him a racer pajama onesie to really send it home. And that made me want to smile, because Carson somehow really knew how to make the kids day. Dylan was excited he would get to thank the man in person for the toy soldiers, and I encouraged it. It was a thoughtful gift.
