I made absolutely sure the hotel took down my card information before we said our goodbyes to Brad and left, accepting the ride and loading up the company car that Brad had scheduled for us to take to the airport.
Dylan, courtesy of Brad, was riding one good sugar rush high from check in, to boarding, to fucking takeoff itself. While I wanted that lawyer and I to share some very pointed words on how he chose to buy Carson and I some time, I knew I'd just have to let this one go. Brad had done us many favors as is, and Dylan seemed like he had genuinely enjoyed himself in the lawyers company... so it was a good way to close this trip out.
Carson had insisted that Dylan and I do priority security check, and board again early, but I was far too fucking exhausted to handle Dylan's energy alone, so we all went through standard check-in together, with Carson more than willing to handle Dylan's surplus amount of energy for me.
By the time we boarded, I was more than ready to take a nap on this about four hour flight. We had boarded around 5PM, right on schedule, and once again I took the aisle seat, and Carson took the middle, while Dylan sat near the window. Thankfully the small child finally calmed down and started to continue on with his book... only after he seemed to get every last word in the English language out of that damn mouth of his. Carson and I then got situated, preparing ourselves to remain seated for a while during the duration of this flight.
As soon as Dylan lost himself in his literature once we were up in the air, well en route now, Carson slipped his right hand into my left and laced our fingers before bringing them to his lap. Then he turned his attention towards me. "So a few things," he whispered my way. I could already feel a groan about to slip past my lips at those simple words alone.
I was not in the mood to do anything but knock out for a few hours, yet I held my tongue because, well, he had been really good with Dylan pretty much all day, especially this afternoon leading into the evening.
I didn't understand how he could still have so much energy after-... but I was willing to lean on him a bit more this evening just to make it home with even a shred of my sanity left.
"Brad told me what he'd be helping you with. I think that's very kind of him, and I'm glad you're getting that kind of support."
That made me raise my eyebrows slightly in his direction. "You seem to have moved past your initial skepticism of him. Look at Carson Lee Jones maturing. A glorious sight to see."
Carson chuckled at that. "Don, I still don't know a whole lot about you and him, but I'll always put your safety first. Whether you like it or not. I just feel more assured that he'd put yours first, too. That, and I liked meeting someone you really, genuinely care for." Carson's words made me turn to him completely. "It was pretty stupid of me to not realize the opportunity I had to meet him... to meet someone so close to you."
