𝑱𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒆’𝒔 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆:

When Lisa and I were still together, I had this surprise in mind for her parents. A couple of days ago, I finally made it happen—I bought the restaurant her dad had always dreamed of owning. He used to talk about it so fondly, saying how much he wanted to buy it one day, but life never gave him the chance.

That day, I made a silent promise to myself: when I had enough money, I would buy that restaurant for him. And now, with the success I’ve found, I’ve done exactly that.

I’m on my way to visit them now, nervous but excited. They don’t know yet about the divorce, and I’m not sure how to tell them. Even though Lisa and I are no longer together, I still see her parents as my family. This gift, it’s more than just a gesture—it’s my way of showing them that no matter what’s happened, they’ll always be a part of my life.

Let’s see how they react when they find out the restaurant is theirs now.

After a short drive, I pulled up to Lisa’s parents' house, my excitement bubbling inside me. I parked the car in the public parking lot, took a deep breath, and approached the front door, my heart fluttering with anticipation. I rang the doorbell and waited, trying to calm my nerves.

The door creaked open, and there she was—Lisa’s mom, looking surprised and delighted. Her face lit up when she saw me, and she immediately broke into a broad smile.

Lisa’s mom immediately pulled Jennie into a tight hug, her voice full of warmth. "Jennie, sweetheart! How are you?"

Jennie smiled, returning the hug with equal affection. "I’m good, Mom. What about you?"

"I’m doing well..." Lisa’s mom started to say, but before she could finish, a familiar voice echoed from inside the house, "Who’s at the door?"

Jennie exchanged a playful glance with Lisa’s mom and whispered, "Mom, let me surprise him."

Lisa’s mom smiled knowingly and nodded. Jennie quietly stepped inside, excitement bubbling inside her as she called out, "Dad, it’s me!"

Lisa’s dad looked up in surprise, and when he saw Jennie, his face lit up. With a playful grin, he dramatically exclaimed, "Oh, there’s my handsome daughter-in-law!"

Jennie chuckled at his usual teasing and walked over to hug him tightly. "How are you, Dad?"

He hugged her back, patting her shoulder warmly. "Better now that you’re here!" he said with a wink.

Jennie felt warmth settle deep within her as she pulled away from the hug. There was something about being here, in this house, with Lisa’s parents that always felt like home. Despite everything that had happened between her and Lisa, being with them gave her a sense of belonging she feared she'd lost.

Lisa’s mom smiled warmly, gesturing toward the familiar couch. “Come, sit with us for a while, Jennie. We’ve been wondering where you’ve been. It feels like forever since we last saw you.”

Jennie returned the smile as she made her way to the couch, her eyes drifting over the room. The walls were covered in memories: framed photos of birthdays, family holidays, and shared dinners. Everything was just as it had always been, but now, there was an underlying ache. These people were her family, yet the truth of what had happened between her and Lisa loomed over her like a storm waiting to break.

“I’ve been swamped with work,” Jennie said lightly, trying to push the tension aside for now. “But I couldn’t stay away for long. I actually came by because I have a little surprise for you both.”

Lisa’s dad raised an intrigued eyebrow. “A surprise, huh? What’s Jennie cooking up this time?”

Jennie grinned, her excitement bubbling up. “Remember when I told you once that there’d be a special day, but I couldn’t tell you what? Well, that day is today.”

Lisa’s dad looked like he was about to ask more, but Jennie held up a hand, shaking her head with a mischievous smile. “Not yet. You’ll see soon enough. But first, we need to take a little drive.”

Lisa’s mom and dad exchanged a glance, their curiosity piqued. “Alright, Jennie. You’ve got us hooked. Let’s see what this is all about,” her mom said, playfully nudging Lisa’s dad as they all stood to leave.

As Jennie drove them toward their destination, her heart raced. This was something she had dreamt of doing for them for a long time. The thought of seeing their faces light up with happiness made her momentarily forget the turmoil swirling inside her. For now, this was her focus.

When they arrived at the restaurant, Lisa’s dad stopped short, his eyes widening in disbelief as they stepped out of the car. He stared at the building before them as if it were a mirage. “This... this is the restaurant I’ve always talked about,” he whispered, almost too stunned to believe it.

Jennie’s smile widened as she handed over the documents. “It’s yours now, Dad. I bought it for you.”

There was silence. Lisa’s dad looked at the papers in his hands, his mouth opening and closing like he was trying to form words, but nothing came out. His eyes darted between Jennie and the restaurant, his shock palpable.

“Jennie... I don’t even know what to say... how did you...” he finally managed, his voice shaky with emotion.

Jennie’s voice softened, “I’ve been saving for a while. You’ve always been like a second father to me, and I knew how much this place meant to you. It was the least I could do.”

Lisa’s mom teared up as she pulled Jennie into a tight hug. “You didn’t have to do this. You’ve already done so much for us... but thank you, Jennie. From the bottom of my heart.”

Lisa’s dad wiped at his eyes, still staring at the restaurant with disbelief. “I can’t believe it... you’ve made an old man’s dream come true. Thank you, Jennie, thank you.”

Jennie felt a lump rise in her throat, but she swallowed it down, smiling brightly. “Now, don’t get all emotional on me, Dad. Besides, this is the first time I’ve been to your new restaurant, and I’m hungry. Aren’t you going to treat me to some of your famous Thai food?”

Lisa’s dad let out a choked laugh, wiping away the last of his tears. “Of course, I will! Let’s get inside. I’ll cook you a feast.”

Jennie grinned and looked over at Lisa’s mom. “Come on, Mom, let’s let Dad do all the cooking tonight.”

Lisa’s mom chuckled, nodding. “Oh, I’m more than happy to watch him work.”

Lisa’s dad laughed as they made their way inside. Jennie felt lighter than she had in a long time, as if for these few precious hours, she could forget the pain that lingered behind every smile. Here, with Lisa’s parents, she could pretend things were still the same.

After dinner, Jennie drove them back home. The happiness in their eyes made it all worth it. But as she drove away, her heart sank. She hadn’t told them the truth—that she and Lisa were no longer together. She couldn’t bring herself to shatter their joy, not today.

Jennie knew Lisa’s parents adored her, and she wasn’t ready for them to see Lisa in a different light. She’d decided that when she found Lisa, she would tell her parents the truth: that they were divorcing because they’d grown apart, because they didn’t love each other anymore. But she would never tell them that Lisa had cheated. Some things were better left unsaid.
