This is a shorter chapter, and a different layout as the OG one needed much editing. Apologies for the quick revision and changes made, but they needed to be done. Enjoy ❤️

Carlos POV

* 24 Hours Earlier *

I hear a loud bang come from behind me. Vaas and I quickly turn around, still hidden behind the rocks. I look at Vaas, "what was that?" I ask.

Vaas reaches for his radio that is on the back of his belt. He looks at the group of pirates behind us, awaking for commands, and they immediately start to disperse into the different directions. Vaas clicks the radio on, "Jason, you there?" There is nothing but static from the other end. I look up to see a smoky area- the same area Jason and Batari went into. I see Vaas' expression and he scratched the tip of the radio on his forehead. He tires again, "Hermano, you there?"

Nothing.

I let a sigh out. As we sit in a moment of silence, Vaas secures his walkie back on his belt. I place my hand on his shoulder, "We'll get him back."

"You don't fuckin' know what she'll tell him. What will happen to him. He can't take it. Not after everything. A fuckin' ambush, can you believe that shit?" Vaas rolls his eyes in disbelief.

"We don't know if Batari betrayed him." I say. Vaas and I have made a lot of mistakes, but I have a feeling trusting her wasn't one of them.

"Let's go. We can still make it." Vaas says, and without any moment to retort, he runs off. A few pirates follow his lead, and I trail behind them. Vaas mumbles a few things to himself but continues to run. I stop for a moment to turn to a few of the pirates that came back to meet up.

I hold my hand up in a fist, motioning for the pirates to stop. I get close, "you guys go around there. That smoke is heavy cover, that's where Jason is. We may be able to get him back- but be prepared for anything. Hurry up, we're wasting time!" I say and turn back around. I rush to catch up with Vaas and his inner circle of pirates. We hit the tunnels and take it slow, our weapons ready. As there temple is empty, only the paintings on the wall, we eventually reach the courtyard.

I walk in front, taking the lead. I look back at Vaas. We meet each other's eyes and his is filled with determination. He has been through so much in this temple, he refuses to let any more destruction continue to fill his head. I look back out into the inner courtyard, scoping. I see nothing so I start to run across. We rush up the stairs, into the construction area and most of the smoke already cleared. What is left in the air starts to burn my eyes and dry my throat. I wave the air to thin it out more. A few pirates make crude comments at the gas, and cough, treading out of the inner building. Without warning, Vaas rushes out to the see the broken bridge. As I trail, I spot a small boat vanishing slowly in the distance.

Vaas raises his firearm and I quickly push it down, "Boss, no! Stop, stop, we can't save them!" I plead.

"Shut the fuck up! I'm not going to loose any more of my men! Especially not Jason." He glares at me.

"Vaas, please! T-they don't know you're alive. We can't save him. What will you do if you sink their boat and they drown? They imported something major. Some drug or gas, I-I don't know, but please, Vaas, we need to tread lightly." I beg Vaas with my hand still on the gun. Vaas' breathing gets harder but he puts his gun down. I swallow, "He'll survive. It's what he does." I say.

"N-" Vaas starts but a bullet hits one of our group members straight through the head. The blood splatters onto Vaas and I, and we quickly slide into the broken down area. Most of the gas has lifted and the remainder of the pirates join us. The shots continue and I wipe my face. I frown at the loss of one of our men. I regret ever getting into this business.
