Amira's bedroom was dimly lit, the faint glow of the moon casting a soft silver light across the room. She paced restlessly, her mind swirling with thoughts she couldn't quite contain. The events of the past few days—the teasing, the chase, the way Aleksander had whispered in her ear—had left her feeling unsettled.
Her wolf, ever-present in the back of her mind, was pacing with her, urging her to confront the truth they both knew. But Amira wasn't ready. She wasn't ready to accept that the man she had spent years teasing, the one she had convinced herself she didn't need, was her mate.
With a frustrated sigh, Amira stopped in front of the mirror, her eyes locking onto her own reflection. But as she stared, something shifted. The reflection blurred for a moment, and then, clear as day, her wolf appeared, its white fur shimmering in the soft light, its eyes locked onto hers.
"We need to talk," her wolf growled softly, its voice steady but filled with the weight of unspoken truths.
Amira's heart skipped a beat, her breath catching in her throat as she met her wolf's gaze. They had never spoken like this before—not in such a direct way. But tonight, it seemed, the wolf wasn't going to let her avoid the conversation any longer.
"Talk?" Amira asked, her voice tinged with frustration. "About what?"
The wolf's eyes gleamed with a knowing light. "You know what. Our mate."
Amira exhaled sharply, shaking her head as she resumed her pacing. "I don't understand how this happened. How are we mated to the Alpha of Alphas after all this time? We've been teasing him for years."
Her wolf let out a low, amused growl, its image in the mirror unchanging as it watched her. "You're surprised? After everything? You know how this works, Amira. Fate doesn't care how long you've been teasing him. We were always meant to be his."
Amira scoffed, her emotions swirling inside her as she struggled to make sense of it all. She had spent so long accepting that she was mateless, convincing herself that she didn't need a mate to define her. And now, here she was, faced with the truth she had been avoiding for weeks.
"I had accepted being mateless," she said quietly, her voice betraying a hint of vulnerability. "I never thought we'd be mated to someone like him. And yet, here we are—tied to the Alpha of Alphas. The one I've been teasing, running from, for years."
Her wolf growled softly again, its eyes narrowing slightly as it reminded her, "You may have accepted being mateless, but you never truly believed it. You joked about marrying the Alpha of Alphas, remember? You said it yourself—if no one else came along, why not marry the most powerful Alpha in Ravka?"
Amira clenched her fists, her pacing becoming more agitated as she remembered the words she had once thrown around so casually. "That was a joke! I never meant it seriously. And besides, do you really think he would have even glanced in our direction if we weren't his mate?"
Her wolf's gaze softened slightly, but its voice remained firm. "Maybe not. But that doesn't change the fact that we are his mate. And he's ours."
Amira stopped pacing, her eyes fixed on her reflection once more. She could see the truth in her wolf's eyes, the undeniable bond that had been growing between her and Aleksander for longer than she wanted to admit.
"He never would have looked at us twice if we weren't his mate," Amira whispered, her voice laced with doubt. "He's the Alpha of Alphas. He could have had anyone. But now... now he's stuck with us."
Her wolf growled again, but this time it wasn't out of frustration. "He's not 'stuck' with us, Amira. He chose us—just as much as we chose him. Fate may have brought us together, but it's our bond that will keep us united. And you know it."
