The game continued, as it always had.

Amira had grown stronger and faster with each passing year, her abilities as a dual Grisha and a wolf developing into something more powerful than even she realized. Every day, she eluded Aleksander, slipping through the trees like a shadow, her laughter carried on the wind as she stayed just out of his reach.

But there was something else now, something new that lingered at the edges of her mind. Her grandmother's words echoed in her thoughts more often than she liked to admit, and though she had shrugged it off at the time, a part of her had started to notice the subtle shifts in her body.

She wasn't a child anymore.

The first signs came quietly, almost unnoticed. A strange warmth in her veins, a tingling in her skin that she couldn't quite explain. But soon enough, it became clear that something was happening.

One day, as the sun began to set over the Little Palace, Baghra appeared at Amira's side, her dark eyes studying the young wolf with the same sharpness she always had.

"Come with me," Baghra said, her voice firm but gentle. "It's time."

Amira frowned, confused for a moment. "Time for what?"

Baghra gave her a knowing look. "Your first heat cycle, child. It's starting."

The words hit Amira like a wave, and she felt the sudden flush of warmth in her cheeks. She had known this day would come, had been warned about it, but now that it was here, it felt far more overwhelming than she had imagined.

"I... I didn't realize it would happen so soon," Amira muttered, her voice shaky.

Baghra sighed, placing a hand on Amira's shoulder. "It happens when it happens. But now, we must move quickly. The other wolves mustn't catch your scent."

Without another word, Baghra led Amira away from the palace grounds, toward the secluded hut hidden deep in the forest. The hut had been designed for moments like this, for times when a wolf needed to be hidden from the pack, their scent blocked from reaching others.

As they approached, Amira could feel the heat rising within her, the strange sensation of her body reacting in ways she hadn't expected. It was confusing, frightening, and a little exciting all at once.

Baghra opened the door to the hut, ushering Amira inside. "This will keep the others from smelling you. You'll stay here until the cycle passes."

Amira nodded, her heart racing as she stepped into the dimly lit hut. The air was cooler here, the shadows wrapping around her like a protective cocoon. She was grateful for the quiet, for the solitude. But just as Baghra was about to close the door, a shift in the wind caught Amira's attention.

And then it happened.

Before the door could fully close, Aleksander's keen senses caught something—a faint scent, something unfamiliar yet undeniably powerful. He stopped in his tracks, his sharp eyes narrowing as the scent hit him like a punch.

It was Amira's scent. Her heat.

Aleksander's wolf stirred within him, reacting instinctively to the pheromones in the air. His body tensed, his mind racing as the scent lingered, though it wasn't overpowering—at least not yet. She wasn't of age, but the scent was enough to make his wolf grow restless.

"Her heat," his wolf whispered, low and urgent. "She's close."

Aleksander clenched his jaw, resisting the pull of the scent. It wasn't time, not yet. She was still too young, still not of age, but his wolf recognized what was happening. The shift had begun.
