Five years had passed, and the game had not changed.
Amira, now thirteen, had grown into her role as the elusive white wolf, her once childish tricks evolving into calculated maneuvers that kept even the Alpha of Alphas on edge. Every day, when Aleksander was present at the Little Palace, the chase would begin—sometimes in the early morning, other times in the fading light of dusk. She knew when and how to appear, always darting out of his reach just in time, vanishing into the trees with a mischievous grin.
In those five years, she had perfected the art of escape, her speed unmatched, her cleverness sharper than ever. But the chase was more than just a game now. It had become part of her daily life, something she looked forward to as much as she did her time with her friends, Marie and Nadia.
Aleksander had grown used to her presence—or rather, her absence. Every day, without fail, he would catch that familiar flash of white, hear the teasing yip as she bolted into the forest, and give chase. But he had yet to catch her, no matter how many times they played the same game.
The years had made him wiser, more patient, but still, the white wolf eluded him.
On the rare occasions when he had to attend meetings with other Alphas from distant regions, once or twice a year, the game would pause. Amira would continue her training, working on mastering her dual powers of Sun Summoner and Tidemaker with Baghra, always hiding the depth of her abilities from the rest of the palace. But the absence of the chase left a hole in the routine, one that Aleksander felt keenly whenever he was away.
This Day, a New Chase Begins
Today, Aleksander stood in the courtyard, his dark eyes scanning the grounds. The years had not dulled his instincts, and he could feel the presence of the white wolf before he even saw her. It was a game they both knew well by now, but as Amira had grown older, the stakes felt different.
More personal.
She was no longer a child, yet still not fully an adult. Her skills were sharper, her tactics more refined, but the thrill of the chase remained the same.
Suddenly, there she was—a flash of white darting across the edge of the forest, her speed and grace unmistakable. Aleksander's wolf stirred within him, the familiar rush of adrenaline coursing through his veins as he shifted seamlessly into his wolf form.
He took off after her, his black fur bristling in the wind as he chased her through the woods, the trees a blur around them. But, just as she always did, Amira stayed just out of reach, her agile form weaving through the forest with ease. Even now, at thirteen, she could still outrun him, still slip away before he could catch her.
Today, though, there was something different in the air. Perhaps it was the crispness of the autumn wind or the lengthening shadows that followed her, but Aleksander felt a shift. He couldn't quite place it, but the chase felt more significant today, as if it were more than just a game. His wolf had whispered it to him before—there was something about the white wolf that was important, something that would become clear as she grew older.
And she was older now.
Amira glanced back at him, her blue eyes sparkling with mischief as she twisted through the trees, her white fur catching the light. Aleksander pushed harder, his legs pumping as he tried to close the distance between them, but she was as elusive as ever, disappearing into the forest like a ghost.
The chase ended as it always did, with Aleksander standing alone in the clearing, his breath heavy and his chest heaving. His wolf stirred inside him, restless, but resigned to the fact that today, once again, she had escaped him.
