YUNHEE:
"How are things with that Jay boy?" My mom asks from the other side of the screen, stirring a cup of coffee in her kitchen. I was sitting on a bench outside our college campus after class, which was almost empty now.
It had been weeks since we got to speak over video call due to our busy schedules, and I was happier than ever to see them again. Texting them everyday and talking to them face-to-face (not in person, but still) felt very different. Unfortunately, my mom just wanted to be filled in on all the gossip and I was regretting telling her that her single pringle of a daughter finally has a crush on someone.
"You talk like we're together or something," I say, rolling my eyes. I think about it for a second too long and my face betrays me.
"Ooh look at our daughter~ she's blushing~" my dad teases me as he enters the frame, sipping coffee from his own cup.
"I'm not blushing! Leave me alone," I huff, looking away from them in embarrassment. From the corner of my eyes, I notice them smile fondly.
"If only we could meet soon," my dad sighs, wearing a tired smile on his face. My mom nods in agreement, setting her yellow cup aside. "We miss you so much. Your brother too, he misses you."
"If he misses me so much ask him to call me sometime, then," I scoff. "Sometimes I forget that I even have a brother. Him and that goddamn banker job of his."
"Hey! I'm here, you know? I can hear you!" Yeonjun, my older brother, speaks from the background in an offended manner. Seeing how he wasn't present till then, I assume that he just got home and no one noticed.
"Oh my God, so you are alive!" I gasp in a mocking manner. "I thought you must've died seeing how you never reply to my texts," I say sarcastically.
Yeonjun's a very sweet brother to me, I'll give him that, but the way he ghosts his own sister makes me wonder how any of his relationships have ever lasted. He pouts.
"Hey! You know I'm very busy. Your very loving brother would never ignore you on purpose, you know that~" he says in a singsong manner, annoying me.
"Don't piss me off, Yeonjun. Get out of my face already," I tell him playfully, but my mother interprets it as me starting a fight.
"You're seeing each other after so long. Be nice to your brother, Yun!" My mom scolds me from behind, and suddenly her words hit me with a big wave of nostalgia. It felt like it was just yesterday when the four of us lived under one roof, spending all our time together and enjoying beach trips during the weekends. Yeonjun and I constantly bickered with each other back then, and we always got in trouble with our parents for it. I sigh.
"I can't wait for my next vacation to come see you. I miss you so much," I say, suddenly feeling sentimental. If I waited long enough, I was sure I'd be driven to tears. That's exactly the kind of thing I wanted to avoid in a public space like the one I'm in now.
"I mi-"
"Who are you talking to?" I almost drop my phone when Yeonjun's voice gets cut off by Jay's, who unexpectedly appears behind me. I could almost see all the evil ideas going through Yeonjun's brain as Jay unknowingly enters the frame. I had to end this call, fast.
"Is that Jay-" he begins asking before I interrupt him.
"Gotta go, bye, love you!" I say as I end the call, panicked. I keep my phone facing down on my lap, and Jay eyes me questioningly.
"So, is he a friend of yours or something?" He asks nonchalantly, acting like he didn't want to know my business till two seconds ago.
"As if," I roll my eyes. "That was my brother."
