BCM: What prompted you to start writing on Wattpad and what is one thing you find valuable about the platform?
AlysLaskey: A writer friend recommended Wattpad to me because she loved the commenting function. I also really enjoy being able to comment in-line as I read a story, like a real-time reaction feed! I like how Wattpad has created communities of writers with the Bootcamp Mentors and Ambassador programs. Writing can be lonely, and these make it less so.
BCM: How did you discover the Bootcamp Mentors and what have you found most valuable about this Wattpad community program?
AlysLaskey: My mentor and I first became known to each other through a competition we were both entered in. I followed her account and saw that she was involved in the mentorship program, and was excited to get involved myself.
BCM: What motivated you to write the story you're working on with your mentor?
AlysLaskey: I have been working on a story not intended for Wattpad, instead my mentor has been helping me to prepare a submission package for agents for a novel I wrote last year. The story came to me while I was travelling, and I wrote the first draft on trains and park benches!
BCM: If you had to describe your story in three words, what would they be?
AlysLaskey: Relatable, heartfelt, and funny (I hope!).
BCM: Tell us one thing about your writing process that has helped you the most.
AlysLaskey: Walking with music and notebook/pen in my pocket always helps me to untangle plot points I'm stuck on.
BCM: Share two Wattpad story recommendations.
AlysLaskey: My very dear friend Kate Carridan KateCWrites is writing a series of Shakespeare adaptations, the first two of which are available on Wattpad: SOUL OF LEAD and Dead as Earth.
