Today was the day. She was going to talk to Diluc. Talk about what she'd heard, her feelings and how they were going to move forward. She'd woken up with that thought and now that it was in her head, she couldn't wait to follow through with it.
She made it to his office first thing in the morning, ready to start talking as soon as she'd opened the door, only to find it empty. It was odd, considering Diluc always came in before her, despite living farther away. Maybe he had to talk with Varka or something. She'd gone around HQ looking for him, though he was nowhere to be found. Her patrol shift had cut her search short, so now that it was finally over, she was making her way back to his office.
Y/n knocks on the door and waits the faint come in from inside before entering. Diluc was sitting on his desk, a smile growing as his eyes met hers. ''Y/n, you're here. How was patrol?''
''The usual. Nothing interesting.'' She made it to his desk just as he'd started to stand up, the two face to face.
And then both of their mouths opened. ''I have to tell you something.''
Y/n's eyes widened as their voices overlapped, while Diluc laughed. ''You can go first,'' he said.
''No, you go first,'' Y/n beckoned with a shake of her head.
''No, you. I insist.''
''You're higher ranking than me, you have to go first.''
''Mine isn't even work related.''
''Neither is mine.''
''Fine.'' Diluc relented, rubbing the back of his head. ''My father is organizing a party at the Angel's Share for my birthday tomorrow and I wanted to invite you.''
''Oh!'' Y/n's eyes widened. His birthday was tomorrow, she'd almost forgotten. ''Right! Yeah, I'd love to come. Unfortunately, you'll end up getting your present later in the day, then.''
Diluc chuckled. ''I can't wait, then. Now it's your turn.''
''Huh?''
Diluc raised an eyebrow. ''You were going to tell me something?''
Right. Should I tell him now? The day before his birthday? It sounds stupid now, confessing in his office out of the blue, the day before his birthday. No, that feels like such a dick move.
''Uh . . .'' Think, think, think. ''I just wanted to tell you how excited I'm for tomorrow and for you to get your present. Like, the one from me, specifically.'' Nailed it.
Diluc laughed. ''Well, you're raising my expectations now. It better be good.''
''Of course it will be.'' Y/n grinned, watching as Diluc finally sat back down. The moment he looked away from her, her face dropped.
Fuck, what the hell did I do? His present is so basic, he'll never be impressed with it! Holy fucking shit, what do I do?
She cleared her throat. ''Well, my work is over for the day, so I'll take an early leave, if you don't mind.''
Diluc hummed. ''Yeah, sure, go ahead. I'll see you tomorrow?''
''Yeah, tomorrow. When you're an adult! And you'll get your super-awesome present!'' She laughed awkwardly. Stop fucking talking! She rushed out before Diluc could comment further.
She hurried down the stairs, her eyes wide and stuck ahead as her mind tried to figure out what to do. She suddenly spotted Jean walking through the hallway. Her body acted instinctively, rushing towards her friend and grabbing her by her arm, ignoring her surprised yelp as she dragged her to one of the corners.
