Izzy paced the small apartment where she and Damian had taken refuge, her heart pounding in her chest. Every second that passed felt like an eternity, and the tension in the room was suffocating.
Damian had been gone for too long. He should have been back by now.
She had done her part, keeping the guards distracted long enough for Damian to slip inside his father's building, but now the silence weighed heavily on her. What if something had gone wrong? What if Luca had caught him? The thought made her stomach churn.
Her mind raced with worry. She had told Damian they needed to be careful, that they couldn't take any more risks. But Damian had been determined. His family's empire had to fall, and this was their only chance to stop them. It was all too much. Too dangerous.
She couldn't lose him.
Izzy glanced at the door for the hundredth time, hoping it would swing open and Damian would walk through, safe and unharmed. But the minutes dragged on, and doubt crept in, gnawing at her.
Suddenly, a knock echoed through the apartment. Her heart leapt into her throat.
Damian.
She rushed to the door and opened it, her breath catching as she saw him standing there, leaning heavily against the doorframe, his face pale and drenched with sweat. His shirt was torn, his hair disheveled, and blood stained his knuckles.
"Damian!" she gasped, rushing to his side to help him in. "What happened?"
Damian winced as he limped into the room, his body tense with pain. "Luca."
Izzy's stomach dropped. "Did he hurt you? Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Damian said through gritted teeth, though it was clear he was anything but fine. He stumbled toward the couch, collapsing onto it with a groan. "I got what we needed. The files are all here."
Izzy knelt beside him, her eyes searching his face for any sign of serious injury. "You look like hell."
Damian managed a weak smile. "You should see Luca."
Despite the fear and worry swirling inside her, Izzy felt a small sense of relief wash over her. Damian was hurt, but he was alive. And more importantly, they had the files. The proof they needed to bring down both their fathers.
"Tony helped me get out," Damian continued, his voice strained as he leaned back, closing his eyes for a moment. "Luca would have killed me if he hadn't shown up."
Izzy's heart twisted at the thought of Damian being cornered by his own brother. The Rossi family's ruthlessness knew no bounds, and Luca was the worst of them all. She reached out, brushing a strand of hair from Damian's face, her touch gentle.
"I'm just glad you're here," she whispered.
Damian opened his eyes, his gaze softening as he looked at her. "I couldn't leave you, Izzy. Not now. Not ever."
Her chest tightened at his words, a surge of emotion filling her. She didn't know how they were going to survive this, but as long as they were together, she knew they could face whatever came next.
"We need to go public with this," Damian said, his voice taking on a hard edge. "We need to expose everything."
Izzy nodded. "But how do we do that without getting ourselves killed? Both our families have people everywhere. The moment they find out what we're planning..."
Damian sat up straighter, grimacing as he adjusted his position. "We go to the media. The files are enough to bring them down, but we need to make sure the world sees them before our families can silence us. Once the truth is out, they won't be able to hide anymore."
Izzy's pulse quickened. Going to the media was a bold move, one that would paint a target on both their backs. But Damian was right. They couldn't hide in the shadows anymore. If they were going to survive, they needed to take control of the narrative.
"Who do we trust?" Izzy asked, her mind racing. "Everyone in this city is either bought off or scared of your father and mine."
Damian's brow furrowed in thought. "There's one person. A journalist. He's been digging into my father's dealings for years. He's been blacklisted, threatened, but he hasn't backed down. He's the only one I trust to get this out."
Izzy's heart raced as the weight of their decision settled over her. This was it. This was the moment everything changed. Once they went to the media, there was no turning back.
"When do we go?" she asked, her voice steady despite the fear gnawing at her.
"Tonight," Damian said, his eyes locking with hers. "The sooner, the better."
The city was quiet as they made their way to the small, run-down building where the journalist worked. Izzy's heart pounded in her chest as they approached the door, her nerves on edge. She kept glancing over her shoulder, half-expecting Luca or one of his men to appear out of the shadows at any moment.
Damian knocked on the door, his hand firm but tense. After a few moments, the door creaked open, revealing a man in his mid-forties with graying hair and tired eyes. He eyed them warily, his gaze flicking to Damian with recognition.
"Rossi," the man said, his voice laced with suspicion. "What are you doing here?"
"We need your help," Damian said, his voice low but urgent. "We have something that will take down my father and Valenti. But we need you to expose it."
The journalist's eyes widened, and he stepped aside, allowing them into his cramped office. Papers and files were strewn across every surface, and the air was thick with the smell of coffee and stale cigarettes.
The man, whose name was Harris, gestured for them to sit as he settled behind his desk. "You're serious about this?"
Damian pulled out the drive, placing it on the desk between them. "It's all here. Offshore accounts, corrupt deals, blackmail-all of it."
Harris stared at the drive for a long moment, the weight of its contents clearly dawning on him. He leaned back in his chair, letting out a slow breath. "If this is real, it'll bring down the entire Rossi and Valenti empires."
"It's real," Damian said, his voice firm. "But we need you to make it public. Once this is out, there's no going back."
Harris nodded slowly, his eyes sharp with understanding. "You're risking your lives by coming to me. You know that, right?"
"We don't have a choice," Izzy said, her voice steady. "This is the only way."
Harris studied them both for a moment before picking up the drive. "Alright. I'll get this out. But once it's done, you need to disappear. Your families won't just sit back and watch their empires crumble."
Damian exchanged a glance with Izzy, a silent understanding passing between them. They had known this moment was coming. The moment they would have to leave everything behind.
"We'll be ready," Damian said.
Hours later, as they lay low in the shadows of a dingy motel room, Izzy couldn't sleep. The weight of everything pressed down on her, making it impossible to rest. Damian was beside her, his hand resting on hers, but even his presence couldn't calm the storm inside her.
"We're doing the right thing," Damian murmured, sensing her turmoil.
Izzy turned to look at him, her heart aching. "Are we? Once this is out, our families will come for us. They won't stop until we're dead."
Damian's expression hardened. "I won't let them touch you, Izzy. I swear."
Tears pricked at her eyes, but she blinked them away. "I don't want to lose you."
"You won't," he whispered, pulling her close. "Not now. Not ever."
As the first light of dawn crept through the curtains, Izzy rested her head against Damian's chest, her fear momentarily giving way to the hope that maybe-just maybe-they could survive this.
But deep down, she knew the real battle was just beginning.
