Chapter 5 - Luz's turn (finally)

Luz POV (Mar 17, Saturday)

Luz was so excited for this game. She had been training all summer with her siblings, Hunter and Vee, at their godmother's house. Hunter was a senior in college, finishing his degree in Museum Studies, or nerd stuff as Luz and Vee referred to it as. Vee was Luz's fraternal twin sister, being an inch shorter than her twin and being the booksmart one of the two.

Vee was studying Engineering on a full ride scholarship, while Luz was playing soccer for her scholarship and studying Education. Back to the game, Luz got called to do a coin toss by the ref, as she approached, she saw a pretty girl with auburn hair and teal pre wrap walking towards her. "Heads or tails." The ref said, "Tails." The UBones captain responded, "Heads, I guess." Said Luz. She sucked in a sharp breath as the coin was flicked into the air, "Tails." The ref said, the other girl let out a sigh, "I would like to have the ball first.". Luz shrugged, "Can I have the left side of the field?"

"Coach Whispers! We have the left side first." Luz said, jogging back to her team. Coach Whispers smiled, "Great. Now for positions, Viney's in goal, Willow, Katya, Amber, and Eber, you guys are on defense, Cora and Mary are center mids. Ukla, right wing, Polly, left wing. Luz and Masha are up top to start. Skylar and Luna are off with me. Got it?"

The team clambered over the bench and formed a pile of fists in a huddle, "Gravesfield on three, Gravesfield on three, one, two, three, Gravesfield! WoOoo" Laughter broke out as a terrible effort to imitate a ghostly whisper was attempted. Luz grinned and set out onto the field, she was ready. The whistle blew, signaling the start of the game, a pink haired girl from the other team passed it back to her teammate who kicked it up to another girl who was pushing up the feild, before Willow got control of the ball and passed it to Masha.

The ball bounced around players for a bit before Luz got a run with it. She weaved around players like they were simply practice dummies, and when Luz had a clear shot, she let swung back her foot and fired. The shot was basically perfect, going into the upper left corner, right above the goalie's head. Luz let out a celebratory whoop and was engulfed in her players arms, patting her back and giving her high-fives. 'I hope Mami saw that,' Luz thought.

Luz felt great as the game continued, scoring another two goals while Masha scored the other two, they were up 4-3 and there was only 3 minutes left. Another sharp whistle indicated the end of the game, Luz was ecstatic, rushing over the bench to congratulate all her teammates. As she led her team to fist bump the other team, she saw the goalie avoiding her gaze and several other players glaring into the back of her head.

"Hey Luz, great game eh?" Coach Whispers said as they patted Luz on the back, "I sent your mom the game footage already, get ready for when you get home, she said she was going to drop off some food at your dorm." Luz groaned, she knew what that meant, her mom would show up with twenty Tupperware Bowles full of homemade food, stuffing Luz and her mini fridge to the brim, again. "Thanks Coach Whispers, I'm glad we started the season strong." Luz smiled back, "I have to go, Hunter's waiting for me in the car." "Bye Luz! See you at practice!" They said, "See you, Coach Whispers!" Luz responded.

On her way to the car, she saw the other captain walking back to her car, slipping a pair of headphones over her head, Luz watched as the other team's goalie bumped into someone, mumbled an apology, and didn't notice her water bottle now on the ground. "Hey wait!" She shouted, "You dropped this." "Oh thanks," The shorter girl replied, "Good job, by the way." "Thanks! You were great too!" Luz beamed, "I have to go, but take this." She pulled a slip of paper out from her bag and handed it to the goalie. Luz turned around and started to to walk away before she twisted back, "See you later, hermosa!" She called to the other girl.

She continued her walk back to Hunter's car while humming her favorite song, La Patrulla by Peso Pluma, "Open up Goldie." Luz said as she knocked on the car window, Hunter rolled his eyes, "Don't get your sweat on my car seats, put a towel down." Now it was Luz's turn to roll her eyes, "Fine."

Luz turned up the radio and sighed, taking off her shin guards and cleats, suddenly her phone buzzed.

Luz smiled and responded,
