Chapter 2 - Game Day

Amity POV (Mar 17, Saturday)
Game day nerves have never hit harder, the pit in Amity's stomach had never felt deeper, she wasn't sure why, as she had never experienced pregame nerves as bad as now. Amity tried blocking it out of her mind, she tried jogging around the field, she even went to the bathroom to see if it was a stress poop! But alas, she was still a mess.

When the refs called the captains for the coin toss, Amity walked up with another girl from the opposing team, she had a grown out pixie cut with curls springing off the sides that was tied into a low ponytail, a warm caramel complexion, and large brown eyes. Amity had to admit, the other captain was very pretty, but that would mean nothing if she was bad at the game. "Heads or tails." The ref said, "Tails." Amity responded, "Heads, I guess." Said the Ghouls captain. Amity held her breath as the coin was flicked into the air, "Tails." The ref said, Amity let out a sigh, "I would like to have the ball first." She said, the other captain shrugged her shoulders, "Can I have the left side of the field?"

Amity spoke to her team about the results of the coin flip, safe to say they were happy with the results. "Girls, here's our starting lineup," Coach Lilith said, "Amity's in goal, Cat, Bo, Amelia, and Eileen, you all are defense, Skara, Moony, Eden, and AJ, you guys are midfield, Boscha and Sonja, you both are up top, Mae you're on the side for now." "Yes Coach Lilith." All the girls replied in unison, "Banshees on three, one, two, three, Banshees!" As the team jogged onto the field and took position, the other team let out a ghostly noise, followed with laughter.

The whistle blew, the game started, Boscha passed the ball back to Skara who kicked it up to Sonja, who had run up the field in preparation, as the ball was about to land, a defensive player on the other team intercepted it and passed it back up to Amity's side of the field. The ball bounced around players for a bit and then, the captain who did the cointoss caught the ball under her foot, quickly clearing through the midfield and making it past most the defense, she lined up her shot, Amity was ready though, her eyes focused on the girl's torso, watching it for any sudden movement, when she caught herself looking at the opponent's broad shoulders and strong looking arms. That little distraction was all she needed to miss the block, and for the ball to fly above her head into the net. The girl cheered and was engulfed in her teammates arms, 'At least my mom didn't see that,' Amity thought.

Right now, she was feeling hot, and not because of the warm spring temperature, "Damn it! I should've seen that coming." Amity grumbled, she knew she had to keep her head up, that other captain wouldn't get another shot, for sure. Fast forward to the second half, the score was currently 5-3 in the other team's favor, Boscha, Skara, and Sonja has all scored great goals, but that tall girl with the brown eyes had scored another 2, while another striker on her team scored the other two. "Get it together, Blight." Amity muttered, but there was something about the brown eyed girl that was captivating.

Time skip to after the game

We lost. First game of the season and we lost. Amity groaned into her hands, "Mom's gonna beat my ass..." "Hey Ams, get up, we have to be nice." Skara says, nudging her. She gets up and walks to the front of the line (goalie and captain privledges), "Good game.." she mumbled, extending her fist to fistbump the other team. Amity started walking and the rest of her team followed, she avoided the tall girl's gaze as she walked by.

After Coach Lilith's after game speech, Amity slung her bag on her shoulder and started walking back to Ed and Em, who were waiting in the car for her. "Hey wait!" A voice shouted from behind, "You dropped this." The tall girl said, handing Amity her waterbottle, "Oh, thanks," Amity replied, she tilted her head up to stare at the other girl, "Good job, by the way." "Thanks! You were great too!" The girl smiled, "I have to go, but take this." The Ghouls captain handed Amity a folded slip of paper before turning around and walking away, "See you later, hermosa!" She called back.

Amity was left speechless until Ed rolled down his window and yelled at her to get in the car. She plopped down in the back row and threw her bag next to her, "Sooo, who was that?" Em said while starting the engine, "The other team's captain." Amity grumbled back, "The captain, huh, what did she give you?" Ed said wiggling his eyebrows, "My waterbottle." She replied, "And..?" Em said with a smirk, "And a piece of paper." Amity responded, "Open the paper, Mittens, or do you want me to read it for you." Ed snorted, the twins shared a knowing look, their little sister was a "useless lesbian" as they called it.

Amity opened the paper and smoothed it out, "I can read it, Ed, it says 'xxx-xxx-xxx, text me, hermosa' with a smiley face." There was a moment of silence before Em gasped, "Did someone flirt with our Mittens?" "WHAT- no! I'm sure she meant as friends, I don't even know if she's gay or not!" Amity sputtered out, her face growing red, "Text her Mittens, if you do I won't tell Mom you let a ball in because of a cute girl." Em said, tapping the wheel in excitement. Amity grumbled but complied.

"-mity! Amity you're red, what did you say?!" Ed says, smacking her shoulder, Amity swats his hand away, "Nothing! I don't like her like that!" "Uh huh, sure Mittens." Em says, smirking, "Ed, take the phone." Ed snatches the phone out of Amity's hand, "She called Mittens pretty!" Ed says, pushing Amity's tomato face away, "N-no! She said my name was pretty! Not me!" "She said it matches you, it still counts!" "Give my phone back!" Ed threw the phone onto Amity's lap, "Mittens has a cruuush!" Em said in her most annoying sing-songy tone, Amity rolled her eyes and shoved her headphones on, blasting music to ignore the twins' snickering in front of her.
