Y/N's POV
The rain drummed softly against the windows, a steady rhythm that normally would've calmed me. But nothing felt calming anymore. I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the book in his hands. He was reading to me, a soft, even tone in his voice, like this was normal. Like everything was okay.
My mind drifted away from his words, the story dissolving into background noise as my thoughts spun in frantic circles. Every day, it felt like the walls were closing in a little more, like my freedom was slipping further out of reach. The worst part? He genuinely believed this was a relationship.
That we were together.
I shivered, though the room was warm. What had he done to make me feel so trapped? The grip he had on my life was terrifying, and he didn't even seem to see it. He smiled at me when he caught my eyes wandering, and I forced myself to return a weak smile, playing along just to keep the peace. Just to avoid pushing him over the edge.
I had to get out. I had to figure out how.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the bedside table, jolting me from my thoughts. I blinked at it, the unfamiliar sound almost foreign. I hadn't heard it ring in days, weeks maybe. He always kept it from me. My heart raced—who could be calling? Maybe someone had figured out something was wrong. Maybe help was coming.
Before I could move, his hand shot out, snatching the phone off the table. He glanced at the screen, his lips curling into a smile.
"It's your bestie," he said, looking too pleased with himself. My stomach churned.
He answered the call, his voice warm and casual, as if this was just a normal day in our twisted little world.
"Y/N? Y/N's here with me," he said, flashing me a look of satisfaction, as if he'd done me a favor.
My heart dropped into my stomach. The voice on the other end—it was Maia. I could barely make it out, but the relief was instant and overwhelming.
They found me.
But my relief quickly twisted into panic as I realized I couldn't say anything to give away the situation. I had to play it safe. One wrong word, and he might snap.
"She said, uh, y'all were friends and close," he continued, his tone almost mocking.
He scoffed loudly, as if the idea was absurd.
"Well... uh hey?" I forced the words out, keeping my voice steady. I hoped Maia would catch on to the hesitation in my voice, but I had no idea how much she understood. I could barely think straight. My heart was hammering so loudly in my chest, I was sure he could hear it.
Maia's voice came through again, clearer this time.
"We should meet up," she suggested, her tone casual but laced with urgency. I could tell she was trying to figure out if I was okay. She didn't know what was going on, but she knew something was wrong.
Before I could even respond, he cut in, his voice hard and final.
"Actually, she can't." His smile didn't falter, but there was a coldness in his eyes that made my blood run cold. I froze, my mouth half-open, the words I wanted to say dying on my lips. He was looking at me like he owned me, like my life was his to control.
I wanted to scream, to tell Maia everything, to beg her for help. But I couldn't. Not with him sitting right there, watching me like a hawk. I swallowed the lump in my throat and forced a weak laugh.
"Yeah, uh, maybe another time," I said, my voice shaking.
Maia paused on the other end. I could feel her trying to piece things together, but I didn't know if she'd figured it out. God, I hoped she had.
"Okay..." she said slowly, her suspicion creeping into her voice. "Well, call me when you can."
"Sure, yeah," I replied, my voice tight.
He ended the call before I could say more, placing the phone back on the table with a satisfied grin.
"There we go. No need for any unnecessary distractions." He reached over and patted my leg, as if he had just done me a favor.
I forced a smile, but inside I was screaming. Every second with him felt like a countdown to something darker. Something worse. He genuinely thought this was okay—that we were in a relationship, that everything he was doing was normal. It terrified me how disconnected from reality he was.
I had to keep playing along, for now. But I couldn't keep this up forever.
Somehow, I had to get out.
And fast.
