As Edward and Vidalia entered the biology classroom, Edward’s eyes immediately darted to his usual seat. Relief washed over him—Bella wasn’t there yet. The familiar sense of dread that had been building in him loosened just a bit.
The teacher, Mr. Banner, was already seated at his desk, flipping through some papers as other students chatted among themselves, waiting for the bell to ring.
Still, Edward’s mind was anything but calm. The weight of his decision, the idea of going to the teacher and asking to move seats, felt daunting. It was such a small thing—just a simple request—but somehow, it was tied up in everything he felt about himself.
He had spent so long believing he had to endure whatever came his way, especially the discomfort and emotional turmoil. Changing seats? It felt like admitting weakness, like running from something he should be able to handle.
He stood frozen near the doorway, his eyes scanning the room. His grip tightened on the strap of his bag as the familiar swirl of uncertainty and guilt began to creep back in. A part of him felt foolish for even considering it.
He was Edward Cullen —why should he be afraid of something as trivial as sitting beside Bella? But the truth was, it wasn’t just about the seat. It was about how broken he felt inside, about how much everything had spiraled since this morning.
His thoughts were interrupted by a soft touch on his hand. Edward looked down to see Vidalia’s fingers lightly resting over his, her grip warm and reassuring.
She didn’t say anything at first, just looked up at him with that same unwavering concern that seemed to cut through all of his internal conflict.
"Edward," she said quietly, her voice calm but filled with purpose, "you don’t have to do this alone. If you’re feeling unsure, I can ask the teacher for you. Or I can stand by you while you ask. Whatever you’re comfortable with."
Her offer was simple, but the way she said it felt like a lifeline being thrown to him. She was offering him a way out —support without judgment. He felt the tightness in his chest start to ease, the tension in his grip loosening as he processed her words.
Edward stared into her eyes, seeing only understanding and patience there. He didn’t know why, but something in her gaze made it feel okay for him to accept her help. "You don’t have to do this alone" Her words echoed in his mind, and for once, he allowed himself to believe them.
