The next afternoon, Edward felt a lingering tension as he drove towards La Push, the familiar feeling of anticipation and caution swirling within him. He’d wrestled with his hesitation over this trip all night, but there was no question in his mind — spending the day with Vidalia was worth whatever effort or discomfort he might face.

Today, he would have to ask permission from the Quileutes, and he was prepared for a complex conversation. Still, he wasn’t fully prepared for what was waiting for him.

As he pulled into a small clearing near the border, he spotted two figures: Jacob Black and his father, Billy. Both men had their arms crossed, their expressions firm and unreadable. Edward took a calming breath before stepping out of the car, bracing himself.

“Edward Cullen,” Jacob muttered, his voice laced with barely concealed resentment. “You have a lot of nerve coming here.”

Edward gave him a measured nod, choosing to ignore Jacob’s hostility for now. He addressed Billy directly, his tone polite. “Mr. Black, I wanted to come to you and respectfully ask for permission to attend an outing at La Push Beach this Saturday. My class is going on a trip, and I’d like to join—”

Jacob cut him off, his eyes flaring. “You think you can just waltz in and ask for favors after everything you did to Bella?” His tone was sharp, bitter, and his fists were clenched by his sides. “If you cared at all, you wouldn’t have broken her heart just to chase after some other girl.”

The accusation struck Edward with a force he hadn’t anticipated. He felt a pang of guilt — not for his feelings for Vidalia, but for the pain Bella had endured as a result. He tried to keep his voice calm. “Jacob, I never intended to hurt Bella, but feelings change and I wouldn't be with someone I don't have feelings for anymore, and you know I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t important.”

“Important?” Jacob scoffed, his face twisted with anger. “Right. Important enough to ditch her for Vidalia, her own backstabbing sister. The one who’s been parading around, soaking up everyone’s attention like she can’t get enough.”

Edward’s jaw clenched, his anger flaring. He hadn’t expected Vidalia to be brought into this, especially not with such vitriol. “Jacob,” he said through gritted teeth, “you’ve never even met Vidalia. You’re basing your judgment on someone else’s hurt, and it’s not fair.”

Jacob’s face hardened, his hands shaking slightly as he stepped forward. “I don’t need to meet her to know what she’s like. Bella told me everything. She said Vidalia’s an attention-seeking liar, always playing the innocent one when she’s really just two-faced.”
