When Bella woke up, the sounds of Alice and Jasper floated through the house, surprisingly loud for the early hour. She checked the clock, noting it was just after 2 in the morning, and felt an unsettling prickle of unease. After taking a moment to gather herself, she quietly made her way to the living room.
Alice was perched on the edge of the couch, engrossed in her sketching, while Jasper leaned in closer, watching intently over her shoulder. They were so absorbed in Alice's work that they didn't even glance up as Bella entered. Curiosity propelled her forward, and she crept to Jasper's side to peek at the drawing.
"Did she see something more?" Bella asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Yes," Jasper replied, his tone serious. "Something's brought him back to the room with the VCR, but it's light now."
Bella's eyes scanned Alice's drawing, which depicted a square room with dark beams crossing its low ceiling. The walls were lined with wood paneling that looked outdated, and the floor was covered in a dark carpet with an intricate pattern. A large window occupied the south wall, letting in light, while an opening through the west wall led to the living room.
One side of the entrance was marked by a sizable tan stone fireplace that divided the two rooms. In the southwest corner, Alice had rendered the TV and VCR, precariously perched on a too-small wooden stand. An aged sectional sofa curved around in front of the television, with a round coffee table occupying the space between.
"The phone goes there," Bella whispered, pointing to a spot near the fireplace. Two pairs of eternal eyes turned to her, their gazes filled with concern.
"That's my mother's house," Bella said, her heart racing as she recognized the room.
Without hesitation, Alice sprang up from the couch, grabbing the phone and dialing. Bella stared at the precise rendering of her mother's family room, her mind racing with worry. Uncharacteristically, Jasper moved closer, lightly resting his hand on her shoulder. The comforting contact intensified his calming influence, dulling the panic threatening to overwhelm her.
Alice's lips moved rapidly as she spoke into the phone, the low buzzing of her words becoming a chaotic hum in Bella's ears. She struggled to concentrate, the urgency of the situation pressing heavily on her chest.
"Bella," Alice said, her voice breaking through Bella's haze. Bella looked at her numbly, feeling as though she was submerged in a tidal wave of anxiety.
