The memory hit Kinich like a wave, sweeping him away from the rooftop and back to a time before he'd ever even met you.
He was sitting in Mavuika's office, the familiar scent of coffee and paperwork filling the air. Mavuika was leaning back in her chair, her arms crossed as she stared at him with a knowing smile.
"You know, you really should meet her," Mavuika had said, her tone playful but firm. "You two would be good together."
Kinich, sitting across from her, gave her a skeptical look. "I'm not really into setups, Mavuika. You know that."
"Oh, come on! Just grab some coffee with her. It's not like I'm asking you to marry her. Just a date."
He had sighed, leaning back in his chair. "Why are you pushing this so hard? I've never even met her."
Mavuika chuckled, a glint of mischief in her eyes. "You will. And trust me, when you do, you'll understand why I'm pushing this. You two... you're similar in a lot of ways. And she's had it rough, Kinich. Harder than most. She could use someone like you in her life."
Kinich frowned, his interest piqued despite himself. "What do you mean by that?"
"She's been through a lot," Mavuika said more softly now. "I won't get into it, but she's stronger than she looks. She's got that same fire you do, but she's also... sad, sometimes. The kind of sadness that comes from losing things you can't get back."
Kinich had leaned forward then, his curiosity growing. "And you think I'm the one to help her with that?"
"I think you'd understand her. And she'd understand you. You're both a little broken, but in a way that fits together, you know? Give her a chance."
Mavuika slid a photo across the desk toward him—a picture of you. He had hesitated before picking it up, studying your face. You were smiling in the picture, but there was something in your eyes, a heaviness that he recognized all too well.
"She looks... sad," he had muttered, more to himself than to Mavuika.
"She's been through hell," Mavuika said, her voice gentle. "But she's tough. And I think you'll learn to like her, maybe even more than like her, once you get to know her."
Kinich had stared at the photo for a moment longer, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth despite himself. There was something about your expression, something familiar that drew him in.
The memory faded, and Kinich found himself back in the present, his body still slumped against you on the rooftop. But now, even as his panic ebbed and flowed, that memory lingered in his mind.
He had never expected to care for you this much. He had never expected to feel this way at all. But now, holding onto you, knowing you were safe, he realized Mavuika had been right.
He had learned to like you.
Over those years, Mavuika told a lot about you. Kinich began to get interested. It was as if, he began to care about someone he doesn't know...
When that someone, began to care about more than he expected...
What will his poor heart..?
Kinich blinked, the blur of his room coming into focus as he stirred awake. His head felt heavy, and his body ached as though he'd been dragged through a nightmare. But then he saw you—slumped in the chair next to his bed, sleeping soundly, your breathing soft and steady.
