The roar of gunfire and the sharp crack of explosives tore through the air as Gekko and Iso moved through the battlefield. They were back in combat, surrounded by the chaos of enemies closing in, but the tension between them had shifted. Though unspoken, the connection they had formed in the safe house lingered, growing stronger with each passing moment. Now, more than ever, Gekko felt Iso's presence, not just as a protector, but as something deeper.

They fought like they always had—efficient, precise, moving as one. Gekko summoned Wingman to plant a spike as Iso eliminated threats with surgical precision, his dimensional blades slicing through the air with deadly accuracy. Gekko's creatures swarmed around them, helping clear the path, but his eyes kept drifting toward Iso, who seemed more focused than ever—too focused.

Something was wrong.

Iso had always been intense in battle, but now there was an almost frenzied energy to him. His strikes were faster, his movements sharper, more dangerous. The calm, calculated demeanor Gekko had grown used to was unraveling, replaced by something more desperate. Gekko could see it in his eyes—a raw edge, a sense of urgency that wasn't just about the mission.

"Iso, we need to fall back!" Gekko shouted over the chaos, trying to keep up as they moved through a corridor littered with enemy bodies. They were surrounded, the fight closing in, but Iso wasn't listening.

Iso's blades cut down another enemy with a brutal efficiency, his breath coming in ragged bursts. He was pushing too hard, too fast, not thinking. His obsession with keeping Gekko safe was consuming him, and Gekko knew it.

"Iso!" Gekko's voice broke through the haze, and Iso finally paused, turning to face him. The look in his eyes was wild, filled with fear and something else—something darker. "We need to regroup. You're pushing too hard."

"I can't," Iso said, his voice low, strained. His eyes darted around the battlefield, searching for threats that hadn't even appeared yet. "I can't let them get to you. I won't."

Gekko stepped closer, reaching out to place a hand on Iso's arm. The tension in Iso's body was palpable, his muscles coiled like a spring about to snap. "You're not thinking straight," Gekko said, his voice softer now, trying to calm him. "We're in this together, remember? You don't have to do it all alone."

Iso's gaze flickered, the intensity in his eyes faltering for a moment. "You don't understand," he said, his voice quieter, but filled with a desperate edge. "If I don't protect you, if something happens to you—"

"Nothing's going to happen to me," Gekko interrupted, his voice firm. "Not with you by my side. But you're not helping if you're burning yourself out like this. We need to work together, not like this."

Iso's jaw clenched, his fists tightening around his blades. He was spiraling, the weight of his obsession dragging him down, blurring his focus. He had been so used to keeping Gekko safe, to watching his every move, that now, in the middle of danger, it was overwhelming him.

"I can't lose you," Iso whispered, his voice cracking. "You don't understand what it would do to me."

Gekko's heart pounded at the raw vulnerability in Iso's words. He stepped even closer, lowering his voice to a calm, reassuring tone. "You won't lose me, Iso. I'm not going anywhere. But we have to get through this together. You can't protect me if you're falling apart."

Iso's breath hitched, the reality of Gekko's words sinking in. He looked at Gekko, really looked at him, and for the first time, he saw the fear in his eyes—not fear of the battle or the enemies surrounding them, but fear for *him.* Gekko wasn't afraid of the danger around them. He was afraid of losing Iso to his own obsession.

A sharp explosion rocked the ground beneath them, pulling them back into the present. Enemies were closing in again, but Gekko didn't move, waiting for Iso to make the call.

Iso's eyes flicked to the battlefield, then back to Gekko. The wild desperation in his gaze slowly gave way to something steadier, calmer. He took a deep breath, forcing himself to focus. Gekko was right. He couldn't protect him if he lost control.

"Stay close," Iso said, his voice more measured now. "I've got your back."

Gekko nodded, relief flooding through him as he saw the change in Iso's posture. They weren't out of danger yet, but something had shifted. Iso wasn't just fighting to protect him blindly anymore. He was fighting with him.

They moved as one again, cutting through the enemies with renewed precision. Wingman darted ahead, securing their path while Iso and Gekko covered each other's backs. The chaos of battle swirled around them, but for the first time in what felt like forever, Gekko didn't feel like he was being watched from the shadows. Instead, he felt Iso's presence beside him—equal, steady, and unwavering.

As they pushed forward, the tide of the battle began to turn. The enemies were thinning out, and the rest of the team had regrouped. They were winning.

But as the last of the enemies fell, Gekko's mind was still on Iso. The battle might have ended, but the storm between them was far from over. He glanced at Iso, who was breathing heavily, his eyes still sharp with intensity, but there was a quiet exhaustion in him now—a weight that hadn't lifted, not completely.

After the last explosion faded into silence, the two stood still for a moment, catching their breath. Gekko looked over at Iso, his eyes filled with concern. "You okay?"

Iso nodded, though he didn't meet Gekko's eyes. "I'm fine."

Gekko didn't believe him, but he didn't push. Not yet. Instead, he stepped closer, his voice gentle but firm. "You don't have to do this alone, Iso. You know that, right?"

Iso finally looked at him, his expression unreadable. There was a long silence before he spoke. "It's hard to stop," he admitted, his voice low, almost vulnerable. "Watching you. Protecting you. I don't know how to... let go."

Gekko smiled softly, his eyes full of warmth. "You don't have to let go. Just... let me be by your side. Let me help."

Iso's breath caught at Gekko's words, and for the first time in a long while, he felt something other than fear or obsession. He felt something close to hope.

"Okay," Iso whispered, the word barely audible, but filled with a quiet promise.

And in that moment, standing in the aftermath of battle, they both knew that whatever was between them—whatever had started as an obsession—was changing. The shadows that had once consumed Iso were beginning to lift, and for the first time, he let himself believe that maybe, just maybe, he didn't have to fight them alone anymore.
