He let out a low almost amused-sounding chuckle. His eyes lock onto me. "You're quite the firecracker, aren't you? Always with the comebacks, Adelaide. But believe it or not, I'm trying to look out for you."

I rolled my eyes again. "Is that what this is? Looking out for me? Because it feels a lot more like babysitting with a side of control issues."

He stepped closer towering over me. "You think I'm trying to control you?" His voice dropped, becoming more serious. "If I wanted to control you, you'd know it. But I don't. Not unless i have to for your good. I've given you space even let you speak to your... friend."

The last word dripped with suspicion, and I could tell he still wasn't convinced about Jenna. I keep my face neutral. I couldn't let him suspect that Jenna was the key to my escape.

"Right," I said. "So generous of you to let me see a friend. I feel so blessed under your rule, my liege." I say as I give him an exaggerated curtsy.

His eyes flashed red again and took a deep breath.

"You're pushing your luck," he muttered. "Don't mistake my patience for weakness."

"And don't mistake my sarcasm for submission," I shot back.

He smirked and his eyes darkened. "You are something, Adelaide. I can see why they chose you to lead the rebellion but you'll find this bond isn't as easy to break as you think."

I immediately stiffen at his words. Did he know? Was he just guessing, or had he figured out what I was planning?

"I'm not interested in being your mate, Sebastian," I said plainly. "And I certainly don't need your protection like you think I do."

His smirk instantly faded and his expression turned serious. He stepped closer and I could feel the heat of his body as his intense eyes met mine.

"Whether you want it or not, you are my mate," he said quietly and certain. "And I'm not letting you go. Not now. Not ever."

I swallowed my spit and kept eye contact. His words weren't just a threat they were a promise.

I wouldn't back down.

"Guess we'll see about that," I whispered.

His eyes stayed on mine for a moment as if he were searching mine. Then, suddenly with a slow nod, he finally took a step back.

"Let's go," he said with a commanding tone.  "We're done here."

I finally let out a breath i didn't even know i had been holding.

As we headed back to his house,

My mind was racing trying to figure out the next move in the game that had suddenly become much more dangerous.

I glanced at him from the corner of my eye and I noticed the way his jaw tightened every time I exhaled too loudly or shifted my legs slightly. He was clearly on edge, but I couldn't tell if it was because of Jenna or because he was sensing my growing desperation to get out of this bond.

"You're quiet all of a sudden," he said lowly.

I shrugged not looking at him. "Maybe I'm just tired of hearing myself talk."

He snorted though there was no humor in it. "That'll be the day."

"I know what you're thinking," he said "You think you can break the bond, that you'll find some witch or spell to set you free. You don't understand what we are, Adelaide. This bond isn't just magic it's fate. You can't outrun fate."

I stare at him in disbelief. "Fate?" I repeated, skeptical. "You believe that? That we were meant to be together?"

His eyes seemed to darken, "You don't have to believe it for it to be true." he says his eyes flashing gold.
