"I'll get it grandma, stay sitting." I said bringing in the tray of coffee from the kitchen as someone rang the doorbell.
"I'm old dear, not crippled." Gertrude, Gerdy as most called call her said.
"I'm here to take care of you, stop complaining." I said and walked to the door and smiled when I opened the door.
"Mr. Thrombey, right on time." I said opening the door and he smiled at me.
"Magnolia, how many times have I told you it's Harlan." He said and I smiled.
"And how many times have I told you it Nola." I said and he smiled leaning down and kissing my cheek. "She is right in the sitting room." I said motioning to the room as I took his coat.
"Will you be joining us?" Harlan asked and I shook my head.
"No, I will be upstairs so you two behave." I said as walked in him into the sitting room where my grandmother was. Harlan Thrombey and my grandmother had been friends almost their whole lives. Never romantic seeing as they married different people, but they always had coffee twice a week. Once at my grandmother's house and once at Harlan's place. I lived with my grandmother just to help around the house, but it was nice since I had an apartment upstairs with my own kitchen and everything including my own entrance.
"Writing another book you won't let me read?" Harlan asked and I laughed.
"Maybe..." I said and headed upstairs. As I sat at my computer looked at the blank page and the blinking cursor I groaned. Why must I have writers block, why now. I sighed and stood up and started pacing. I was talking to myself about possible plots and the way for the story to go. By the time I finally sat down to write I heard a car pull up outside and someone just lay on the car horn. I groaned and went to look out the window and glared when I saw who it was. I stormed down the steps, and I saw Harlan ignoring the horn.
"I'll deal with him, you two continue to enjoy your coffee." I said and Harlan nodded. I grabbed my coat and headed outside and started knocking on the window on the Beemer that was honking. He removed his sunglasses and rolled down the window.
"Yes Mags?" Ransom Drysdale asked, Harlan's grandson who thought he was god's gift to...well everyone and thought the world should bow down to him. I hated him, known him since we were kids and could never stand him.
"It's Nola, Ransom, you know that." I said.
"Mags, what do you want? Where is my grandfather I'm here to pick him up." Ransom said and I groaned.
"You're like an hour early, he is still enjoying his coffee and chatting with my grandmother. You can come back in an hour." I said and went to walk away, and he lay on the horn again. "DAMNIT RANSOM! STOP!" I yelled walked back to the car and he was smirking at me.
"I have plans in an hour and can't make it." Ransom said and I groaned.
"Okay fine. I will take him home if you can't be here. You're so inconsiderate Ransom." I said and went to walk away.
"Always nice seeing you, Mags!" Ransom yelled out of the car window.
"Screw you Ransom." I yelled back and went in the house and looked at Harlan and Gerdy who were trying not to laugh.
"I will be taking you home in an hour since your grandson is an inconsiderate asshole." I said putting my jacket back on the peg and going to head back upstairs.
"I don't want to put you out sweet girl." Harlan said and I shook my head.
"It's not a problem at all. I'm going to continue to write, I just got a great idea on how to kill someone." I said and Harlan laughed. I wrote murder mystery/romance novels.
"Is Ransom behind the inspiration?" Harlan yelled as I walked up the stairs. I just laughed and shut the upstairs door. I sat down at my computer and just started writing. I was in a zone when I heard the doorbell. I sighed and got up. I opened the door, and I saw Gerdy going to the door. I saw Ransom standing there when she opened the door. I quietly shut the door and looked at the clock, it had been an hour, and he was back and being a gentleman. What the hell was he playing at? I went back to writing when I heard a knock on my door. I walked over and opened it to see Ransom standing there with a smug look on his face.
"Thank you for not laying on your horn." I said and Ransom gave a small nod.
"Didn't want to get the wrath of Mags Maxwell again." Ransom said and I groaned.
"Is there something I can help you with?" I asked and Ransom sighed.
"My grandfather sent me up here thinking you would give me one of your manuscripts to read. He knows you will never turn one into him, but he thought maybe if I was just charming enough you would give me one." Ransom said and moved his face closer to him to the point our breath was mixing. I glared at him.
"Drysdale are you trying to flirt to get a manuscript from me?" I asked and he laughed.
"Mags, if I was going to flirt with you, you would know it." Ransom said and I crossed my arms. Ransom groaned.
"Okay fine, he didn't send me up here. I came up knowing you write, and I just started at the company and I knew you had tons of manuscripts, and I was hoping you would give one to me to read so I could show Harlan I'm trying." Ransom said and I huffed a laugh.
"Ransom, I never gave one to Harlan and I love him. What makes you think I would give one to you?" I asked and Ransom groaned and shoved his hands in his pockets.
"Come on Mags, help a guy out. I won't even tell him you gave me one and if it sucks, I will just give it back to you." Ransom said and I punch him in his chest.
"Not something you say to someone you are wanting a favor from." I said and Ransom sighed. I groaned and walked into my apartment and Ransom followed as I went to a closet and pulled out a box. I started going through the manuscripts and found one.
"Here. Start with this one." I said and Ransom look at it and nodded.
"Thank you." Ransom said and I shook my head.
"I don't know why I'm helping you." I said and he smiled.
"Because you secretly like me." Ransom said and I shoved him back towards the door.
"I can't stand you Drysdale, remember that." I said and Ransom smirked at me.
"Bye Mags." Ransom said leaving the apartment.
"Drop dead Drysdale." I said and shut the door.
