"I'm sorry dear, Logan's not home right now."

Logan's grandma was sweet. She had hair a bit past her neck, but she always wore it in a tie or clip.

She was always smiling, like Logan.

His grandpa seemed pretty chill too last time I saw him. I mean, I'm kind of afraid of them both, same with Ashlyn's parents, but all four of them seem nice.

I clenched my phone in my hand. "It's alright, do you know where he would be?"

"I think he said he was going to the library, wanted some alone time. But I think he'd say you're an exception." She said with a small laugh.

"What do you mean?"

She just smiled a little bigger and said, "Oh, nothing. Did you need a ride to the library?"

...

On the car ride there while we were leaving the driveway it was pretty quiet. I kept checking my phone to see the time and to see if Logan had texted me anything.

The minute we were on the road she spoke. "Do you mind if I turn on some music, dear?"

"That's alright," I replied.

She reminds me of my mom. Just can't go a car ride without the radio.

She connects her phone to the car to play music. When she turns on the music the name of the song pops up on the small screen.

There's no way in hell I can pronounce that, but I lean my head against my seatbelt and listen.

Je te laisserai des mots
En-dessous de ta porte

En-dessous de les murs qui chantent
Tout près de la place où tes pieds passent
Cachés dans les trous de ton divan
Et quand tu es seule pendant un instant

Ramasse-moi

Quand tu voudras
Embrasse-moi

Quand tu-

The music shuts off. "We're here, sweetie."

She yells 'have fun' when I get out of the car and wave.

I have a feeling this isn't going to be fun.

...

I walk up the big staircase, knowing exactly where he is.

At the third floor I stop, like my legs are jammed and can't move forward.

I know I need to do this. I know I need to apologize. But my legs stop working and turn me around.

At the second floor staircase I stop and take a few steps up, then pause again.

I need to do this.

"You look stupid, you know?" I see Ashlyn half way up the flight of stairs.

I dont know if shes trying to initiate a conversation or if she just pointed that out. I know that's shes still pissed with me.

"Stupid question, I know you don't know the answer, but do you know where the Savannah books are?" Ashlyn asks.

I dont know why she thinks so low of me, but I answer anyways.

"Yeah, follow me."

I lead her through the second floor to the books.

"...Sorry there's not that many books on Savannah."

She sort-of smiles at me, for like the first and probably only time. I thinks its only because I helped her. And its barely a smile, its just her not making a straight face anymore.

"Not your fault." She replies.

Before I can walk away she grabs my shoulder.

"One more thing, what's the most hidden place here to read?"

...

I don't lead her to Logan's spot.

I lead her somewhere else, without knowing where I'm going, till I find a quiet, concealed area. She mumbles a thanks and I head back up.

"Hey."

I turn around to look at her.

"You've changed, Hernandez."

I have changed.

I'm not the same person who wouldn't care to apologize.

But if I don't it might seem like I am.

I peek around the corner and see him. He looks up at me. "I thought I'd find you here." He stares at me weakly.

"I'm sorry."

He's silent for a moment, then when I think he's about to speak he just nods.

I don't know what to say and look around till I spot a book on a shelf.

'It Starts With Us'

"I really hate Colleen Hoover." I say, looking straight at him.

I watch his lips curl up.

There it is.

There's my smile.
