Andrew clenched his fists as he stood in the kitchen, trying to control his anger. This argument with his wife had gotten out of control and he knew the last thing she needed was to get stressed out. Chris stood on the other side of the kitchen, resting her hands on her pregnant belly. Andrew's eyes moved down on her body as he looked at the bump where his baby was. His emotions were mixed with frustration and worry.
Chris watched her husband, waiting for him to say something. She knew he wasn't finished. He never ended an argument quickly. It was just the way he was. She took a deep breath as she felt the subtle kicks from her son.
"Babe," Andrew finally spoke, his voice softer than it had been when their argument started. "Please, just hear me out and then we can drop the whole thing. Look, I don't think I'm upset with you choosing Sara to be our son's godmother. I guess I always knew you would. What got me upset was how you just didn't tell me before you asked her. It made me feel," he took a deep breath and ran his hands through his hair, "like you didn't want me to be a part of my son's life."
"Why would you think that? Andrew, I would never cut you out of our son's life. You know that."
"Yeah, I know, but, I don't know. Honestly, I don't know why I let this bother me as much as it did," Andrew admitted.
"I think I have a feeling. It's because ever since we found out what it is we're having and started feeling him kick, it's gotten more real for us what's happening. There are a lot of emotions going on right now. I know I'm feeling many of them coming to me all at once," Chris looked down. "But fighting isn't the way for us to go about it."
"You're right. And I am sorry. I never should've started the fight." Andrew walked closer to her. "The last thing you need is me being unreasonable."
"Don't be so hard on yourself. I would be worried if you weren't being unreasonable," Chris said, a small smile crossing her face. "No matter what, I want you to remember one thing, I will never cut you out of our son's life. You are right, I should've told you first. It slipped my mind and I am sorry about that."
"And I'm sorry for everything. Tonight should've been a joyous night, celebrating that we found out we're having a son. Instead, I had to go an be an asshole and ruin that."
"How about instead of us both standing here and apologizing for something we should just forget about, we get this night back on track?" Chris suggested.
"I think I like where this is headed," Andrew smirked.
"Hmmm, do you really?" Chris stepped closer to him, pressing her body up against his.
Andrew wrapped his arms around her, resting his head on top of her head. "I think the reason why I got so upset was because I'm just so worried."
"There's nothing for you to be worried about," Chris whispered.
"Nothing to be worried about? Chris, you are carrying our son. Of course I'm going to worry. Ever since you told me you were pregnant, I've been terrified something might happen, especially when I'm not with you. I can't help it. Something could happen and I can't control it."
"Andrew, I know you've been worried, but I didn't realize it was this bad," she said, her tone softening.
Andrew nodded. "Every day you're going through this pregnancy, I see the changed you have to go through, physically and emotionally. And what am I doing? Nothing but sitting here and watching you because there's nothing I can do."
"Babe, you are doing more than enough already," Chris said. "You love me. And you love our son. What more could I ask for?"
"That's just it. I don't know. And at the same time, I feel like there's something more I should be doing. I don't want to fail as a husband and a father, yet I feel like I am."
Chris placed a hand on his chest. "You aren't a failure, Andrew. Not even close to it. You are a great husband and you're going to be an amazing father. The way you worry about the baby and me already proves that. What we need to do is stop fighting, no matter how small or big it might be, because we're in this together. And the only way I'm going to make it through this pregnancy is if you and I are a team."
"We are," Andrew closed his eyes. "We will always be a team." He wrapped his arms around her, holding her against his body.
"Good, because I can't do this on my own."
"Is that what you've been afraid of?" Andrew asked, taking his hand and lifting Chris' head up to look into her eyes. "I know I've done things in the past that made you think that I might leave you, but those days are over. I am not that person anymore and I would never leave you."
"I know. I hate that I always go back to that time when our relationship was shaky and afraid you'll leave me," Chris heavily sighed and looked deeply into Andrew's eyes."
"Shh..." Andrew gently kissed her lips. "Let's not talk about that. His hand that was on her cheek as he kissed her moved down to her baby bump. He smiled feeling his son's kicks.
"Oh wow, he's really kicking up a storm tonight, isn't he?" Andrew said, his hand never leaving her belly.
"You know, I think he's been entertained by our fight. He's been kicking this whole time," she chuckled.
Andrew bent down so his lips were near her bump. "Hey, buddy. I'm sorry you had to hear me yelling like that. I promise you it won't be like that again. It's just that, well, daddy can be a mess sometimes. You'll see that for yourself once you're born."
