Chris tried to concentrate on work after Andrew left, but it was hard. The two of them hardly had arguments in all the years they'd been together. Even when Andrew said he wanted a break, it never ended in a fight. Chris just accepted it and hoped things would work out in the end, and usually it did. Now, she didn't know what was happening.
Jami walked into Chris' office, a huge smile on her face. "So...Andrew left already?"
"Yeah, about an hour ago or so," Chris looked up and saw her Jami about to sit on the couch. "I wouldn't sit if I were you."
"Why not?" Jami asked.
Chris looked at her best friend. "Andrew came here to surprise me after a month of us not seeing each other. I'll let you guess why not."
Jami looked at the couch and then at her friend, putting it all together. "You mean you guys...are you fucking serious?"
"I wish I could say I was joking, but I'm not. And I know what you're thinking. Believe me, it wasn't something I expected. In the ten years we've been together, we've never done anything like this before. And it won't happen again."
"First, I'm not Louis, so I'm not going to say anything about it being against the rules what the two of you did. What I am going to say is...I can't believe after all these years, this was the first time the two of you had sex in your office."
"Yeah, he really took me by surprise when I found out he wanted to," Chris said.
"Alright, so what's wrong?"
"What makes you think something is wrong?"
"Chris, you just saw your boyfriend for the first time in a month and you guys had sex in your office. And you're sitting here looking miserable."
"Is it that noticeable?" Chris sighed.
"Very. Not out with it," Jami said, sitting at Chris' desk. "Come on, we're best friends."
Chris debated if she should tell Jami what happened or not. Andrew was very private when it came to their relationship and hardly anyone knew they were even a couple. But Jami was her best friend and the argument she and Andrew had really had her upset.
"Before Andrew left, we had a fight," Chris finally said.
"And?"
"And? What do you mean and?"
"Well, I mean it's normal for couples to fight. Given how long the two of you have been together, I don't see why that would be a problem."
"That's just it, we never had a fight like this before. " Chris tried not to cry.
"Really?" Jami was surprised.
Chris nodded. "Jami, no one knows this, but we've taken breaks in our relationship."
"You're kidding?" Jami was shocked to hear this news.
Chris shook her head. "Don't you remember the news about him dating Emma when he was filming the Spider-Man movies?"
"Yeah, but I thought those were just rumors or a publicity stunt. I mean, it's been known to happen with actors."
"Except this time, it was true," Chris sighed. "Twice he asked for a break when he was filming those movies because he thought he was in love with her," she rolled her eyes. "There were other breaks after, but they didn't last long. But when it came to Emma, those breaks were long and horrible ones. For me that is."
"So, how does that fit into the fight you guys had today?" Jami asked.
"Well, after...you know, he brought up us trying to have a baby. This was a conversation we had before I left California and I told him we would talk about it when he came out here. He decided today was the day he was going to bring it up. And I didn't think right after having sex in my office was the perfect time to discuss it and he got upset saying that the only reason I didn't want to discuss it was because I didn't want a baby with him. I told him the truth. That now isn't the right time for us to have a baby because he's got all these movies coming up and I have new clients to work with, it just isn't the right time. Then, he told me to quit my job so we could start that family. That's when I just told him what's been in the back of my mind all these years. That since he's already broken up with me twice because he fell in love with a co-star, I'm afraid it'll happen again and he'll leave me while I'm pregnant." Chris felt better once she got it all out.
Jami sat there listening to her best friend. "Shit, Chris. Why didn't you tell me any of this?"
"Cause, I didn't want to burden anyone with my problems."
"Still..." Jami shook her head. "So, what happened when you told Andrew everything you just said to me?"
"He said it's not like that anymore and then I told him I didn't have time to talk about this right now and he left. Jami, he says that now. But how can I trust he won't fall in love with another co-star, leaving me again?"
"Chris, I understand why you feel that way. But also, I can see why Andrew is upset that the past was brought up. Since the last time you guys took a break, has he shown any sign he would do it again?"
Chris was silent for a few seconds. "No. Last time we had a break was five years ago....oh fuck."
"What is it?"
"Andrew brought up that very fact and I just ignored him. Fuck!" Chris put her head in her hands. "What did I do?" She moved her hands and looked up at her best friend. "What if I just ruined the best relationship I've ever had?"
"I'm sure it's not that bad. I know Andrew and I bet he's home right now, upset at the argument, but that's all. I don't think he would say this is the end of your relationship."
Chris let out a sigh of relief. "You're right. I'm sure he's just home waiting for me to get back home."
