The next day, after you miraculously got through to not only the strict security officer David Madsen, but also the arrogant prep Victoria Chase, you were planning to meet up with Kate at the Two Whales diner to have tea, in response to an invitation via text from her. After catching a bus in the morning, you were on your way.
You were a little nervous; you didn't think that it was a date, but you still wanted to be presentable to her, in addition to just not overthinking it and having a nice time. It wasn't that serious, you rationalized in your mind, despite your nerve-wracked body physically protesting that statement.
After a million thoughts bouncing around in your head on the bus ride to the diner, you finally arrived. You exited the bus and were greeted by the dawning sun shining on you, washing your worries away with a warm embrace. With your confidence boosted a little, you entered the diner.
As you went in, you didn't actually see Kate anywhere. You wondered where she might be as she typically isn't late for things like Jefferson's class. You decided to take a seat and wait for her. After all, if she took too long, you could always text her and ask where she was.
As you were sitting in a booth, indulging in the nostalgic, mouth-watering fragrances of various customers' meals, you were approached by Chloe's mother.
"Hey, hun. Ohh, I remember you; I saw you in here a few days ago with Chloe and Max" she said.
"Yes, ma'am" you responded.
"Please, call me Joyce" she said.
"Oh, sorry. Yes, uh, Joyce. I'm (Y/N)" you responded once more.
"Alright, nice to officially meet you, (Y/N). So, what are you having?" Joyce asked.
"Well, I was actually waiting for someone. Not Max or Chloe, though" you explained.
"Oh, alright then. Just let me know when they show up, hun" she said.
"Yes, ma'am" you responded, absent-mindedly.
"Joyce" she corrected you once more.
"Right, Joyce" you concluded.
After a while, Kate eventually entered the diner, bundled up in a cute coat and furry scarf. She sat down in your booth and rubbed her hands together, warming them up.
"Uh, hey" you greeted.
"Hi, (Y/N). How are you?" Kate responded.
"I'm alright. How are you?" you asked in response.
"Good" Kate responded simply.
It became more and more evident that neither of you knew how to start the conversation in a casual fashion, which resulted in a brief period of awkward silence. After a little bit though, Joyce resurfaced and broke the silence by asking what the two of you wanted to drink. After you two placed your orders of tea, the silence returned.
Eventually, Kate began to speak:
"So, you wanted to know more about the Meals On Wheels program right?" Kate asked.
"Oh, yeah; how long have you been a part of that?" you asked.
"As long as I've been at Blackwell. It's one of my activities that I do to try and help people around here" Kate answered.
"Oh, that's nice. Maybe that's something I could help you with sometime?" you offered.
Kate then looked up at you, her eyes widened.
"(Y/N), that's so sweet of you. Yeah, of course you can help out, if you truly want to. We need more people who care" Kate said.
"Then you can count on me" you said.
