Day 3: Love among bare branches and falling leaves

********

"Love comes when you least expect it."

Almost everyone has heard that sentence at least once in their lives.

Lonely people are even more likely to have someone tell them on multiple occasions.

How can people even think saying this will ever cheer someone up!?

This wasn't reassuring at all! It was just a false and empty promise.

That's what Keith always believed.

And anyway, it's not like he had time for love.

Grieving over the loss of his father at a young age...

Shiro disappearance...

The discovery of Voltron and a ten-thousand-years-old war...

Leaving Voltron to join the Blades...

Becoming the pilot of the Black lion...

Finding out his mom didn't want to abandon him, but the circumstances were... unusual...

Coming back to a destroyed earth...

Finally winning with only the memories of those who perished...

And now, he was leaving his home planet again. It didn't matter that they won, his help was still needed with the Blades.

His physical wounds might have closed, but the universe's weren't.

Tomorrow, he will be gone, not knowing when he will be back.

Or if he ever would.

Pidge's call was unexpected, though, not unwelcome.

She invited him to spend his last day here with her, offering a visit in the hometown her family originated from in Italy.

With Kosmo, the trip would be fast and she promised he wouldn't be late for his departure.

Who was he to refuse such a kind offer?

Once the lions left, Pidge had chosen to go spend some time with her grandmother. She said she missed her dearly and wanted to think about what to do with her future from now on.

No one objected, she deserved a pause after the craziness of the last years of her teenage life.

Seeing her again felt awesome.

If anyone dug into his brain, they would find out that Keith was ashamed he didn't recognize her when her back was facing him.

It was only when she finally turned around and spotted him, her eyes lighting up in an instant, that he realized who this beautiful stranger was.

"Pidge."

"Keith."

She wore a long green dress that stopped at her ankles, a knitted scarf with pale flowers all over the place and a brown vest. It fitted her well.

Her hair also seemed longer. How had it grown more in this short amount of time compared to the first year following the defeat of Haggar?

"You know, Grandma tricks."

"Huh?"

"My Nonna, she applies a product every night to my hair, it makes it more tamable and it also helps with growth. In her opinion, long hair fits me well so I'm trying something new. Or old, I guess, since it used to be around this length."
