Day 5: Sweaters
*******
At first, this seemed like an amazing idea, really.
It was thoughtful, different, (coming from her) cute even.
Why did it have to be so hard to do?!
Katie had asked for useful tips from people she knew, watched a bunch of tutorials and was very careful with every step along the process.
There was no way Keith wasn't becoming suspicious.
Secretly advancing the project in their room had stopped working a long time ago. She'd stay there for a while, he'd come to make sure she hadn't fallen asleep in an uncomfortable position and her boyfriend would be met with her sitting on the bed, clearly hiding something under the covers, smiling innocently at him.
She was happy he only raised an eyebrow in question at first, but when this started happening at least once a day, he began wanting answers.
"So working on a new project?"
"What type?"
"Is it done soon?"
"Need an outside opinion? I could help with that..."
Katie really couldn't blame his curiosity, she would act the exact same way, but it was a surprise. Her vague replies were beginning to annoy him, she could feel it.
She knew he'd find the link between these situations stopping and her spending all of her free time at her parent's house. But it would soon be over, she only had to add the finishing touches and they could restart spending nights cuddling on the couch while watching TV.
Katie was just stressing out too much.
What if he didn't like it?
What if she got the measurement wrong?
What if he saw a mistake, a flaw she failed to notice and refused to wear it?
Ok, maybe that was a bit exaggerated and dramatic, she knew he would never act that way. Who could blame her? In the end, she spent way more time than usually planned for this project.
From the beginning, Katie knew this wasn't going to be his birthday present, so it's not like she had a due date. Nevertheless, she hoped to gift it to him before it started getting too chilly outside. It was now the end of October and her present hadn't been used at all for the earlier days of the cold season.
Since the woman figured there was still November, December, January and February where it was cold, he'd have plenty of opportunities to enjoy it, so she could take her time to make sure things were perfect in her standards.
That was until she came home late, again, only to find him sitting alone in the living room, Kosmo already asleep at his feet.
"You're still up, didn't you text me that you were tired earlier?" His answer broke her heart a bit. "Yeah, but I always fall asleep much better when I know you're next to me. And I know you like it when we go to sleep at the same time."
God, how is it possible to love someone so much?
How did she land such a caring boyfriend?
*******
"Ok, before you open your eyes, just know that I tried my best, so mean comment. However, you don't need to force yourself to compliment me, I can take constructive criticism just fine." It must have been at least five minutes since Katie obliged Keith to sit down on the couch and closed his eyes. Usually, by that time, his eyes should already be open, but she was still a tiny bit worried he wouldn't like what she made.
No matter how many times her brain told her how ridiculous that idea even was.
"I promise I won't say anything mean, now can I see?" Big breath, it was just a gift (that she had spent months on, but whatever). "Yeah, now you can."
"..."
"Katie?" Does he not like it? "I think you forgot something..."
What?
Oh my god, did she actually forget to attach one of the sleeves, or maybe she didn't make an opening for his head?! If anyone asked, she would say she did not spend a few seconds observing her boyfriend's hands, trying to spot the mistake. If someone asked Keith, he'd back her up.
"Oh, right."
The sweater was still in her hands, hiding behind her back.
Choosing to stare at the wall instead as she extended the gift in her arms, Katie waited for his verdict.
"You made this for me, yourself?" She nodded as she admired the floor that now seemed like the most interesting thing in this universe.
Why was she so embarrassed? This was her Keith. The same guy who saw her do so much stupid shit since the day they met each other...
As crazy as it sounds, she couldn't even recall why she was so stressed a few seconds ago.
All hopes of remembering vanished when he trapped her in a bear hug, whispering in her ear. "Thank you, I love it." She snuggled further into her boyfriend's arms. "I love you."
"Maybe you should try it on, I'll feel your love more if you do."
Keith chuckled as he hurried to put the piece of clothing on. It was really embarrassing how much time she spent on this when there wasn't any kind of design on the sweater, just some colours changing there and there because of the yarn. "Inspired by Kosmo, I really like it. People will have trouble differentiating us when I take him on walks now." "Your humor is truly awful."
"So that's what took my place as your number one priority? I was beginning to become jealous, you know?" Katie had to resist the urge to roll her eyes as he kissed her cheek. " I wanted it to be perfect for you. And I was already taking too long. The original plan was for it to be ready for when it started getting cold outside. I know I'm usually the one taped to you for more warmth, since you're a space heater, but it was in case you got cold too..."
He smiled at his girlfriend, ruffling her hair. "Damn, guess I need to knit one for you too, and really soon. But now, we have a lot of movies to catch on to." Katie grinned back when she saw his cheeks redden. "Yeah, just let me go make hot chocolate first. "
