Mr. Jeon was sitting on the cane sofa on the terrace, holding a packet of grains in his hand. Adjusting his glasses, he began to scatter the grains on the ground. As he did, a pair of birds descended from the terrace railing and began pecking at the grains. A look of sorrow was etched on Mr. Jeon's face as he sighed deeply, continuing to scatter the grains. The birds ate joyfully, oblivious to his grief.
He had brought the pair of birds from the countryside for Jungkook last winter. Jungkook loved birds and had requested his father for a pair. Mr. Jeon never denied his son's wishes, no matter how big or small. He was his precious child, the one without whom he found it hard to breathe. The house felt empty without him now. Every day, Jungkook spent time with the birds, and with his sweet words, he had soon made the birds his friends. Every afternoon, Mr. Jeon and his son would feed the birds together, laughing and joking.
Jungkook had even named the birds— Jun, the male bird, and Eun, the female. The birds loved Jungkook just as much, and whenever he was not around, they seemed restless. But today, they weren’t as lively. They were eating quietly, not hopping around like usual. Jungkook wasn’t here. Mr. Jeon had to feed the birds alone today. He missed his baby terribly. That’s why he was doing all the things his son loved. His eyes welled up with tears, and his glasses fogged over. He removed his glasses, wiped his tears with a handkerchief from his pocket, and cleaned his glasses.
He had never thought he would have to stay away from his beloved son like this. Tomorrow night, they had all return to Busan. It broke his heart to leave his sick child behind. He had been relieved to see him better when they left, but the memory of his tear-filled eyes kept haunting him. Jungkook had trembled and sobbed, and Mr. Jeon had felt a deep sense of guilt, as if he had failed as a father. Somehow, he had managed to compose himself and leave.
--" Your tea.
Mrs. Jeon, with a faint smile, handed him a cup of tea.
Mr. Jeon took a sip, then placed the cup on the small table beside him and gently pulled his wife to sit beside him. Mrs. Jeon rested her head on his shoulder. After a few moments of silence, she spoke in a trembling voice,
--" I miss my baby so much. What is he doing all alone? He must be missing us too.
--" Hmm.
Mr. Jeon sighed deeply, gazing up at the sky as Mrs. Jeon broke down in tears, her long-held pain spilling out.
--" We have done such a great injustice to my innocent bean. Do you think he will blame us for all of this? We couldn’t even be the parents he needed!
Mr. Jeon held her close, resting her head against his chest, comforting her.
--" Our prince will never misunderstand us. He knows his parents would never wrong him.
--" But will he be able to adjust to all of this? Was it really necessary for him to go through such hardship at such a young age? Why is God testing him like this? Why, as his parents, when he needs us the most, can’t we be there for him? We’ve always protected him, yet he must walk this difficult path alone! Why is it like this?
Mrs. Jeon sobbed uncontrollably again.
--" Be patient. Trust in God. Surely, he has something good in store for our prince. This is perhaps his destiny. God likes to test his loved ones, and those who pass the test receive great rewards. Jungkook isn’t alone anymore, he has his life partner with him now, someone to walk alongside him for the rest of his life. May God help him adjust to all this and help him understand the meaning of life, and the bond between a husband and wife.
Mr. Jeon’s calm words soothed her a little. She looked up at her husband and, still tearful, said,
--" Call the Kim's once. Ask Taehyung to bring Jungkook here for a visit.
