(QUINN'S POV)
I tossed and turned, the events of the gala replaying in my mind like a bad movie. Lila's laughter, her fiery spirit, the way she drenched me in champagne, it all swirled around my head until I finally succumbed to sleep.
When morning light filtered through my curtains, I awoke groggy and disoriented. Dragging myself out of bed, I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and stumbled to the bathroom. After a quick shower, I stood in front of the mirror, toweling off my hair. The events of the night before clung to me like a second skin. I couldn't shake off the feeling of irritation that Lila had managed to evoke in me yet again.
As I finished drying my hair, my phone buzzed on the counter. I grabbed it, still half dazed, and opened my email. The subject line made my heart race.
New Case Assignment: St. Mary's Hospital.
I quickly clicked it open. The firm had just been retained to investigate a series of malpractice suits filed against the hospital, alleging negligence in patient care. The email detailed the complaints: several patients had reported critical errors in their treatment, leading to severe complications and, in some cases, life threatening situations.
I leaned against the counter, a mix of thrill and frustration bubbling inside me. This was a high stakes case that could make or break my career, but I was seriously considering passing on it. There were other cases I could focus on, ones without any ties to my past.
Just as I was about to dismiss the email, I scrolled down to the list of employees involved in the case. My heart sank as I noticed a few familiar names. I had hoped to avoid any personal ties in this investigation. Then, as I continued to read, I came across it.
Lila Thompson.
I stared at the screen, disbelief washing over me. How was she involved in this? Did she know about the allegations? My thoughts spiraled. The last thing I wanted was to have her in my life again, especially under these circumstances.
Lila had a way of getting under my skin, igniting feelings I didn't want to explore. Now, with her at the center of a case that could tarnish her hospital's reputation, I felt a mixture of concern and curiosity.
I pushed a hand through my damp hair, trying to process it all. Suddenly, this case had become a lot more complicated.
As I paced the room, I wondered how I would navigate this tangled web.
This was going to be one hell of a rollercoaster.
Curious about what will happen next?
