(QUINN'S POV)
I stood in my apartment, gazing out at the bustling city below, the morning sun illuminating everything in its path. Yet, despite the beauty outside, an unsettling chill gripped me. The events from the gala replayed in my mind—the laughter, the fleeting glances, and the moment Lila's name surfaced in the case against St. Mary's.
At first, I considered dropping the case. But the moment I saw Lila's name tied to the hospital, I froze. I couldn't shake the feeling that I had to uncover the truth. It was more than professional obligation; it felt personal. The mere thought of Lila being involved in something so nefarious sent a wave of dread through me. But I knew she couldn't possibly be part of this, it just didn't fit.
Still, the nagging doubt clawed at my mind, urging me to dig deeper. I needed to know if she was connected to the troubling reports about the hospital, even if it meant confronting uncomfortable truths.
As I drove through the crowded streets, I replayed our past encounters in my mind, our rivalry simmering just beneath the surface. Each time we crossed paths, the tension had crackled between us, a mix of competition and mutual disdain. But now, with her name tied to this case, it felt different.
Arriving at St. Mary's Hospital, I was immediately struck by an undercurrent of tension in the air. The usual calm environment felt charged, as if everyone were on edge. I parked and hurried inside, a sense of urgency propelling me forward.
Walking through the corridors, I noticed a group of doctors huddled together, their voices hushed. I approached them, trying to blend in, my curiosity piqued. Their body language was tense, and I sensed they were discussing the very issues I was investigating.
Suddenly, a nurse hurried past, her face drained of colour. I reached out, gently grasping her arm. "What's going on? Is there a problem with the patients?"
Her eyes widened in panic. "It's... it's just been a rough few weeks. Some patients—"
Before she could finish, another nurse rushed up, urgency etched on her features. "We need to talk to Dr. Fields right now! There's been another incident in the surgical wing."
My heart raced. "What kind of incident?"
The first nurse glanced at me, her expression filled with apprehension. "It's bad. We can't keep this quiet anymore."
The mention of the surgical wing sent a wave of unease through me. I had to know what was happening. As they slipped away, I followed them down the corridor, heart pounding. The closer I got, the more I could feel the tension thickening in the air.
Just as I reached the entrance to the surgical wing, I overheard voices from inside, frantic and urgent. Pressing my ear against the cool surface, I strained to catch snippets of their conversation.
"We can't let anyone find out. The last thing we need is an investigation."
"The money is too good. We can't just walk away now."
A chill crept up my spine. What were they hiding? I stepped back, glancing around to ensure no one was watching. The stakes were higher than I had anticipated, and it was clear I needed to investigate further.
Determined to find Lila, I turned toward the nurse's station. Just then, I spotted her coming out of a nearby room, her expression a mixture of shock and concern. When our eyes met, I could see the surprise and confusion in hers.
"Quinn?" she exclaimed, clearly taken aback. "What are you doing here?"
I tried to maintain my composure, but inside, a surge of adrenaline kicked in. "I could ask you the same thing, Lila. I'm investigating the reports about the hospital."
Her eyes widened, and I could sense the tension in her posture. "Quinn, the hospital... I don't know what's been going on, but the vibes have honestly been so negative lately. I've heard rumors about the surgical wing, some patients going missing, strange things happening during surgeries. It's unsettling."
My pulse quickened at her words. "You've heard that?"
She nodded, biting her lip. "There are whispers among the staff. They're scared to talk, but the tension is palpable. Something feels very wrong."
I stepped closer, gently placing a hand on her shoulder, feeling the tremor beneath my touch. "I'll figure this out okay? But I can't do it without you. You can help me, right? You're a smart girl,I remember that from our classes back then."
I held her gaze for a moment, hoping to reassure her. But before she could respond, a commotion erupted from the surgical wing. Doctors rushed past us, panic etched on their faces. I felt the ground shift beneath me, and I instinctively pulled Lila closer.
"Stay close," I urged, my voice low. "We need to figure out what's happening."
With that, we stepped into the storm, the tension and uncertainty hanging heavily in the air. I had no idea what lay ahead, but I knew one thing: I couldn't let anything, especially not my feelings for Lila, get in the way of uncovering the truth.
