(LILA'S POV)
The next morning, the hospital halls hummed with their usual rhythm. Beeping machines, chatter between nurses, and the occasional squeak of wheels on the tiled floor filled the air. It was comforting in a way, routine, predictable. Just how I liked it. After last night's unexpected encounter with Quinn, I was ready to bury myself in work.
Yet, as I made my way to the nurse's station, I couldn't stop thinking about him. How could he just waltz back into my life after all this time? And of all the places, why here? I groaned inwardly. Rosemoor, a small town that had nothing special about it...
This wasn't supposed to be a reunion spot for old rivals.
Pushing those thoughts aside, I grabbed the patient charts from the station, ready to dive into the day's work. However, as I approached the first room, I overheard hushed voices behind me. Two nurses stood near the supply closet, their backs turned to me, their words barely audible.
"Did you hear about room 214? Another mistake."
"That's the third one this month. Something's definitely off."
My ears perked up, and I slowed my steps, pretending to flip through the chart while eavesdropping.
"They're saying the higher-ups are covering it up. But why? What's happening with these patients?"
"Shh, someone might hear."
I cleared my throat, making my presence known, and the nurses quickly scattered. My stomach churned as I stood there, frozen. Room 214? Mistakes? I tried to push it out of my mind. Hospitals are busy places. Errors happen. But why were they so secretive about it?
I made a mental note to check the chart for room 214 later. For now, I had patients to tend to. But those whispers lingered at the back of my mind, nagging at me like a loose thread begging to be pulled.
By lunchtime, the whispers had multiplied. I heard snippets of concern from different corners of the hospital. Not just about room 214, but others, too. As I sat in the break room, eating a sandwich I wasn't really hungry for, I caught another conversation between a pair of orderlies near the doorway.
"Apparently, they're investigating. No one's safe."
I felt a cold prickle at the base of my neck. What did they mean by investigating? The curiosity was getting the better of me, gnawing at my insides.
I needed answers.
What's going on?
Will Lila and Quinn finally meet?
Let's check the next chapter.
