(QUINN'S POV)
The bleeding was under control. Lila had found supplies from a nearby cart and wrapped my chest tight enough to stabilize me. The pain was still there, but her work had dulled the worst of it.
"Okay," she said, her voice steadier now, "you're not dying on me today, Westbrook."
"Wouldn't dream of it," I replied, letting her help me to my feet.
Her arm around my waist, we started down the hallway. "We need to check on the patients," she said. "I want to make sure they're okay before we do anything else."
I nodded, though every step sent a dull ache through my chest.
When we reached the surgical wing, the sight of the recovering patients hit me like a breath of fresh air. Jessica was sitting up in her bed, her eyes lighting up when she saw us.
"You guys did it," she said, her voice filled with relief. "We knew you would."
I gave her a tired smile. "We're not quite done yet, but we're close."
Her gaze dropped to the bloodstains on my shirt, and her brow furrowed. "Are you okay?"
"He's fine," Lila answered quickly, shooting me a look that dared me to argue. "I patched him up."
Jessica smiled knowingly. "You two make a good team."
Lila blinked, caught off guard, but she didn't deny it.
As we moved through the wing, the other patients greeted us with quiet gratitude. Relief was etched into their faces, and for the first time, the weight on my chest felt lighter, not from Lila's bandages, but from knowing we'd made a difference.
By the time we stepped outside, the sky was starting to lighten, hints of dawn breaking through the darkness. I leaned against Lila for support, the exhaustion finally catching up to me.
"You know," I said, breaking the silence, "we do make a pretty good team."
She snorted. "You're lucky I'm around to save your ass, Quinn."
"Always," I replied, grinning despite the pain.
Her lips quirked into a small smile, and for the first time in what felt like forever, I felt like we could breathe again.
