(QUINN'S POV)

Hospitals have always smelled the same to me, antiseptic and sorrow. But this place was different. It wasn't just grief lingering in the air; it was something darker. Secrets. Lies. Fear.

The moment I stepped through the automatic doors of St. Mary's, I could feel the weight of it. Every hallway felt too quiet, every glance too hesitant. Something was wrong, and I was here to find out what.

I wasn't expecting to see her. Lila Thompson. I knew she worked here but to see her already was fate.

She was a name I had pushed to the back of my mind after I left med school. Smart, determined, and infuriatingly good at making me feel like I was always one step behind. Our rivalry had pushed me harder than I'd like to admit, but it had also left a bitter taste in my mouth.

And yet, there she was, her hair down like always, standing in the middle of this storm I'd been sent to investigate. She didn't see me at first, her focus razor-sharp. But when her eyes finally locked on mine, I could see it, the spark of recognition, followed by the question she didn't want to ask: What are you doing here?

I didn't answer right away. Because seeing her again felt like stepping back into a fire I wasn't ready to extinguish.

What I didn't know then was that Lila wasn't just part of the storm. She was the storm. And once I stepped into her world again, there would be no turning back.
