(QUINN'S POV)
We didn't stop running until the hospital was out of sight. We ran through the darkened streets, dodging between alleyways and side roads, not trusting the main paths. I could feel Lila's pulse racing beside me, her breath coming in sharp, uneven gasps.
We had to get away. We had to figure out our next move.
"Are you okay?" I asked, glancing at her as we slowed to a walk, our pace more cautious now.
She was pale, sweat beading on her forehead. "I'm fine," she lied. "But you... you shouldn't have done that. You shouldn't have risked yourself for me."
I rubbed the back of my neck, trying to catch my breath. "I didn't have a choice. You were in danger. I had to get you out of there."
Her eyes softened, but only for a second. Then they hardened, the walls going back up. "You think I can't take care of myself? Also we were both safe in that shed!"
"I know. But they were too close.I wasn't going to just stand by."
She turned her head, staring ahead as if searching for something in the darkness. "You're the last person I should be relying on."
I swallowed, that comment slicing deeper than it should have. "I'm not asking for your trust, Lila. I'm just trying to keep you alive."
She laughed bitterly. "Alive. Yeah, that's all you're doing. Keeping me alive." She looked at me then, and there was something raw in her gaze, something I didn't understand.
I opened my mouth to respond, but I couldn't find the words.
We were tangled in something far deeper than I ever expected. And neither of us was ready to admit how badly we both needed each other.
"I'm not asking for anything," I finally said, my voice low. "But I won't leave you behind. Not again."
Her eyes flickered, and for a moment, I thought she might soften. But then she looked away, pushing the words back into her chest.
"Then let's get this over with," she muttered. "We need to finish this."
And just like that, we fell back into the pattern of pushing forward, never slowing down, never looking back.
