Summer
I stood by John B in the midst of the small crowd, watching the news about hurricane Agatha, the tension in air was palpable. "Holy shit... Hurricane Agatha?" John B muttered, echoing the statements of others around us.
I couldnt help but feel for him, considering everything he was dealing with. His father was presumed dead only a couple months ago, and now DCS was after him. "Isnt that a kind of good thing? DCS was supposed to do your assessment the same day," I say, trying to inject some hope into the situation.
John B flashed me a smirk, and I couldn't help but smile aswell. "Yeah," he replied with a fake sad expretion "I guess we're probably gonna have to reschedule." he said with a molinh tone making me laugh.
Afterwards, we made our way back to JB's house, where we met up with JJ. I hugged him as he placed a kiss on the top of my head. "Hey, ready for some surfing cupcake? Well maybe we'll go and you stay home?" I could sence the slight concern in his eyes.
"Hell nah! I'm coming along." I protested sternly, hoping he will drop it, and to my surprise he did.
We grabbed our boards and dashed toward the beach in the rain. I stop on a little hill not far from the water, "Those aren't surfable waves, guys" I yell over the thunder, but they just laugh and run towards the water, prompting me do the same.
This can't be a good idea...
As we swam, I found my self struggling to stay afloat, almost drowning multiple time. I paddle next to John B and he suddenly stops, and stands up on his boar d"What's up?" I say but his gaze is fixed on something in the distance, making me follow his line of sight. My eyes scan the water, confused, until I spot a boat thrashing around in the waves "OH FUCK!" I yell, a bit terrified, but John B still doesn't take his eyes off it as he mumbles something I can't hear over the rain.
"Summer! John B! Let's get out of here!" JJ yells, and I immediately comply, swimming to the shore, scared.
"Maybe we should sleep and JB's house?" I say to JJ as he carries my board for me. "Yeah, we probably should." He answers, and I nod, thankful.
As the night comes, I find it impossible to fall asleep. I shift restlessly on the couch next to JJ "Summer..." He mumbles, not even opening his eyes, "Summer, stop. Go to sleep," He says, half asleep.
"I can't," I whine. My breath hitches in my throat at the loud sound of thunder. "Calm down, it's just the weather." My brother throws his arm around me, hugging me to give me some comfort. "Nothing will happen, I'm here, you're safe." He whispered sweet words in my ear lulling me asleep in his embrace.
~Next morning~
I groan feeling water dip on my face, "Wtf?" I mumble, untangling myself from JJ's arms and wiping my face. John B walks out of his room, looking exhausted "Morning Summer," Hegreets me tiredly as he slaps JJ's leg, waking him up. "Yo. JJ, you been outside?"
"I have polio, bro. I can't walk." The blond boy answers, once again not even opening his eyes. "Come on, JJ" I ruffle his hair as I get off the couch and pick up my phone. "No service?" I stare at my phone, "No power as well!" John B yells from the outside.
Great.
"What's the damage?" I ask, standing in the doorway. My eyes scan the porch, seeing the fallen trees. That's not good.
"Agatha did some work, huh?" I hear JJ and feel his presence behind me. "Wasn't the DCS today?" He asks, walking past me out of the house, towards our friend.
"Nah, they're not getting on a ferry." He says picking up some branches, "Come on, think about it. It's god telling us to fish."
And with that, all three of us drive off into the marsh.
